Description:
The YMCA focus is to strengthen communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
Leadership development opportunity in a residential camp setting that provides a quality experience to campers focused on YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. This summer position involves the care of summer campers and staff ensuring their safety, well-being, happiness, growth and development. The Cabin Life Director directly supervises Head Counselors and works with them to assure cabins in each village have Sr. Counselors, Counselors and Jr. Counselor who are fully equipped to care for camper needs; is the primary staff member working with the Head Counselors is responsible for supporting staff, upholding and enforcing all policies and procedures, scheduling time off, scheduling stay over weekend staff assignments, handling staff needs and concerns, camper discipline, building a positive staff culture and being present as a mentor and leader for all staff.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Belief in the YMCA Mission and sets an example of high moral standards, Christian character and values.
- An attitude of teamwork and enthusiasm of service to others.
- Have 2 years of prior experience with children in camping or related youth work.
- Prior experience as a leader or supervisor.
- Physical ability to cover entire camp grounds and participate in all camp activities.
- Ability to positively work with staff from different backgrounds.
- Train and mentor staff.
- Know all Camp Cosby and YMCA of Greater Birmingham policies and procedures, adhere to these policies and assure all staff adhere to these policies.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Successful completion of background screening.
- Acquire and maintain the following certifications prior to start date via YMCA, American Red Cross, American Heart Association and American Health and Safety Institute (ASHI):
- First Aid/CPR /AED (valid 2 years unless otherwise noted)
- Requisite Redwoods Online Training Modules (completed prior to start date and repeated annually).
Responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise sessions during staff training.
- Support all staff at camp and know how to inspire them to be great leaders with our campers.
- Be responsible of the safety, health, welfare and happiness of each staff member and camper in your village and at your accountability areas.
- Lead some and attend all staff meetings.
- Daily meetings with Head Counselors, Activities Director and Sr. ProgramDirector.
- Assist in putting together cabin packet for check in day and camper packets for departure day. Assure necessary forms are reviewed by counselor and then handed back.
- Assign cabin assignments to counselor and campers each session.
- Schedule all time off for staff being flexible and meeting their needs while also maintaining a successful program.
- Assure ACA, Department of Health and YMCA of Greater Birmingham standards, policies and procedures are followed in all areas of camp.
- Assure that your counselors know their camper head counts and never leave a group unsupervised.
- Adhere to schedules and planned activities of the camp.
- Support the decision of camp leaders and work in unison with other Head Counselor, Activities Director and Program Operations Director to assure a safe and excellent camp program.
- Manage camper discipline.
- Assure all staff and camper concerns are properly documented and communicated with Program Operations Director.
- Assist with Camp Reports when needed.
- Supervise Morning Watch and assure that each Morning Watch has been reviewed by a Head Counselor before the group starts.
- Assure that all camp is on time for all meetings, activities, meals.
- Coordinate Check In and Check Out schedules, staff assignment and necessary set up.
- Facilitate a successful Lost and Found Program assuring that all campers return home with the items they brought to camp.
- Create an environment that cares for staff and campers socially, emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually.
- Write and facilitate evaluations of staff with the assistance of the Activities Director and Program Operations Director.
- Assure there is always a staff member 19 or older within earshot or eyesight of the campers.
- Other duties and responsibilities assigned by supervisor.
