Description:

The Imagine Center for Integrative Learning & Life Design (IL&LD) at Johns Hopkins University is an innovative space where students, alumni, employers, faculty, and staff can interact with each other, as well as with alumni, employers, faculty and staff to find opportunities for in-depth experiential learning. The Imagine Center is currently seeking a full-time Campus Security Officer This position is directly public-facing and is positioned in a centralized location that engages a high volume of visitors.
The Welcome Desk at the Imagine Center is the heart of the building. Staff working at the Welcome Desk are often the first and/or only point of contact visitors to the Imagine Center may have. As such, customer service is a significant component of this position. Students, JHU affiliates, and guests should be greeted with a smile and warm welcome. All questions should be given the time and attention needed to provide thoughtful and informed responses.
Responsibilities include uniformed patrols and crime prevention services to protect life and property; offering proactive support of student and staff initiatives; developing and maintaining a positive rapport with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members; coordinating and cooperating with various university administrators in the preliminary and follow-up investigation of complaints; reporting criminal offenses and disruptions; enforcing university policies and regulations and writing reports and keeping records. This position involves shift work and may include schedule changes as needed to meet the security and safety requirements of the Imagine Center. This position reports directly to the Office of Integrative Learning & Life Design and indirectly reports to the Office of Public Safety.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to operate various machines and equipment, including office equipment, radio, and telephone.
  • Must be willing to become trained to operate equipment and technology assigned to assist in performing building tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to effectively engage with university students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Candidates must demonstrate their ability to understand verbal and written directions and maintain a professional demeanor and restraint, which may include stressful situations.
  • Must also be able to work independently in the absence of a supervisor, make observations, and write clear, concise, accurate reports containing acceptable content with proper grammar and punctuation reflecting these observations.
  • Must be able to interact with the general public, students, staff, and faculty in a collaborative manner.
  • Must be able to work all shifts; shifts may be 12.5 hours in duration.
  • Overtime may be MANDATORY.
  • Must be willing to work collaboratively with university mental health professionals in stressful situations involving university personnel.

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS OR SPECIALIZED CERTIFICATIONS

  • Proficient in using computer software programs designed to prepare reports and other documents relative to the position (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Successfully complete a physical/health screening examination by the Office of Occupational Health and Safety, which includes a drug screening. Successfully meet and maintain Campus Safety and Security physical requirements.
  • Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work and officers must be able to remain on their feet for extended periods of time, as well as stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, balance, walk, and run.
  • Run moderate distances and/or climb and /or descend flights of steps; read, interpret, and understand university policies and procedures.
  • Must be physically able to operate various machines and equipment, including office equipment, radio, telephone, building technology, computers with current word processing programs and other applicable software, etc.
  • Must pass a criminal background investigation.

Additional Information

  • The regular schedule for this role is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.
  • Flexible work shifts may be required to include holidays and/or weekends to assist with special events or other operational needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Acceptable completion of basic security officer training and related training required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior security or law enforcement experience.
  • Prior customer service experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Patrol assigned areas on foot.
  • Actively participate in crime prevention and community policing activities.
  • Respond to routine and emergency calls for various types of service and take action as appropriate.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations and maintain confidentiality while writing clear, concise, and accurate reports.
  • Conduct security inspections of Imagine Center facilities and areas, reporting conditions as necessary.
  • Provide other general services as needed, including locking and unlocking building rooms.
  • Work flexible shifts on any day of the week including holidays or weekends, to assist with operational and special event assignments.
  • Using various computers and other equipment as routine functions in this position. Perform other security-related services for the faculty, staff, students, and visitors of the Imagine Center as may be necessary.
  • Provide security for the University’s on-campus property, facilities, and activities as needed.
  • Answer the front desk phone and provide appropriate information to callers.
  • Connect students and guests with specific departments, programs, and staff within the Imagine Center and, more broadly, at JHU.
