SUMMARY
The Newcomer Information Centres (NICs) are walk-in information and referral centres funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and operated by Achev. NICs provide settlement information and referral for the smooth transition of newcomers to life in Canada.
The Care for Newcomer Children Worker is responsible for delivering a high quality experience for children and their parents or legal guardians while consistently adhering to safety standards in the children’s area and to take the lead in providing CNC services and assuming responsibility for the operation of Care for Newcomer Centre sessions.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education - at least a one year diploma in a child development program or a related field from a recognized academic institution
- CLB level 5 in speaking and level 4 in reading and writing
- Current criminal record check in vulnerable sector (not older than 6 months)
- Current First Aid and CPR certification
- Current health assessment (not older than 3 months)
- Current immunization record and proof of tuberculosis status
- Understanding of the programming needs of children who drop in for care for short periods of time
- Basic computer and data entry skills
- Adaptable, flexible and able to work independently
- Knowledge of French or a language other than English is an asset
- Demonstrated experience in dealing with multicultural and disability issues

Responsibilities:
- Follow the Care for Newcomer Centre requirements as set by CMAS
- Provide parent or legal guardian orientation
- Welcome and interact with newcomer children and their parents
- Assess and register eligible children for the program
- Provide information to newcomer parents or legal guardians, as needed for the settlement of their children
- Plan and follow a written program of activities that suits the age, developmental needs and interests of each child as per CNC program philosophy
- Inspect and monitor CNC operation according to program’s written policies and procedures
- Maintain daily records, including attendance and registration forms; prepare CNC monthly reports
- Work with the team members to create a positive environment
- Ensure there are sufficient appropriate materials and equipment for the operations of CNC sessions
- Develop a staffing plan that ensures ratios and qualifications are met according to CNC requirements
- May be required to set up the space and provide mobile CNC
- Contribute to team cohesiveness and team building
- Perform other related duties as required
