The primary purpose of the Career Medical Officer is the assessment, investigation and initial management of patients admitted to the inpatient ward of Hawkesbury District Hospital, under the direction of the Admitting Specialist.
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the medical officer’s skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more autonomous approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Specialist. All patients managed within the hospitals of the health district are under the direct care of a Specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly documented and communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
Responsibilities:
The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of paediatric medical patients, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in paediatric practice, in a complex clinical environment. The Paediatric CMO is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.
It is expected that the CMO has been exposed to all aspects of general paediatric medicine and is able to competently assess children presenting to the Emergency Department and make appropriate provisional diagnoses and management plans. The CMO is also expected to be proficient at both neonatal and paediatric resuscitation. The CMO will be exposed to a broad range of developmental and behavioural problems and they are expected to undertake the assessments as part of the multidisciplinary teams and independently where required.
