SUMMARY OF FUNCTION

  • The registered nurse works as a member of the health care team, coordinating the delivery of comprehensive, individualized care to the Residents of Golden Links Lodge.
  • The Registered Nurse functions under the provisions of the Registered Nurses’ Act, CRNM Standards of Practice, CNA Code of Ethics, MB Health Standards and the Mission, Vision, Values and policies of Golden Links Lodge.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education:
  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing.
  • Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba.
  • Certificate in Gerontology an asset.
  • Experience:

Current clinical experience in Medical nursing and/or Gerontology preferred.

  • Personal:
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to function in a computerized environment (including MDS, MS Office, etc.)
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Mental/physical health to meet the demands/stresses of the position.
  • Ability to foster a positive work environment.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Able to meet the standard of nursing practice outlined in the CRNM Scope of Practice for Registered Nurses and as outlined in the Regulated Health Professionals Act/ Reserved Act.

The Registered Nurse, using current and evidence informed knowledge, performs initial and ongoing assessment of the health status of the Residents.

  • Obtains a nursing history using a variety of sources.
  • Completes the physical examination..
  • Interprets data to determine actual resident needs.
  • Records assessment data in designated formats.
  • Maintains confidentiality of data.
  • Anticipates and recognizes subtle changes, probes to assess further, able to identify relevant factors, understands the significance of and manages appropriately

The Registered Nurse will:

  • Function within the parameters of professional standards.
  • Collaborates with residents/families, and the interdisciplinary team members to evaluate the goals of care and modify care plans as required.
  • Identify, record and report deviations in resident’s status, potential hazards, and personnel issues to the Director of Care.
  • Consults with other interdisciplinary team members as required to meet resident needs.
  • Maintain continuity of care via conferences, unit meetings, drug reviews, and daily shift reports.
  • Administer medications following established procedures.
  • Protect the rights of the residents.
  • Understands their role and processes for ensuring and maintaining resident safety (Abuse, PPCO, etc.).
  • Delegate aspects of care to allied nursing personnel within the scope their job description

Responsibilities:

SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Clinical Practice:
    a) Assessment

The Registered Nurse, using current and evidence informed knowledge, performs initial and ongoing assessment of the health status of the Residents.

  • Obtains a nursing history using a variety of sources.

b) Planning

  • Develops the care plan recognizing physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs of the resident.
  • Sets priorities in planning care, which is designed to maintain the health of the individual.
  • Uses evidence informed knowledge as the foundation for care plan which includes expected outcomes stated in measurable terms.
  • Selects nursing interventions designed to achieve expected outcomes. focusing on resident strengths and preferences.
  • Involves members of the health care team in formulating the individual’s plan.
  • Involves the individual/family, as an active participant in planning care.
  • Supports the individual in carrying out responsibilities for his/hers own

care.

c) Implementing

  • Coordinates care delivery as outlined in the care plan
  • Interprets and analyzes data relevant to Resident’s health status, as outlined in the Reserved Acts.
  • Observes Resident’s response to interventions.
  • Documents interventions and observations in the Integrated Progress Notes.

  • Utilizes the principles of safety and asepsis while delivering care.

  • Follows infection control practices to ensure compliance with infection prevention and control.
  • Uses equipment in accordance with proper operational requirements.
  • Adheres to WHMIS/MSDS standards.

d) Evaluating

  • Evaluates expected and unexpected responses to care.
  • Reviews and revises the care plan based on reassessment of Resident’s changing status.
  • Communicates changes in plan to other members of the team.
  • Recognizes patterns in Resident’s status and analyzes the effectiveness of interventions over time.
  • Resident Management:

The Registered Nurse is accountable for care delivery to all Residents in the facility.

The Registered Nurse will:
