Description:

HOW YOU’LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Working within the Streetcare Team, you will be responsible for the maintenance of cemeteries across South Gloucestershire, performing a vital function for the local community.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • We require you to be physically capable of grave digging.
  • You must be willing and able to work in all weathers.
  • It is essential for you hold a full driving licence Group B or B+E.
  • You must be experienced in the use of powered hand tools used in the ground’s environment.
  • You will have proven experience within a similar role or transferable experience.

Responsibilities:

  • You will prepare graves for funeral services including covering up excavated soil, placing out boards, struts, and matting.
  • Regularly, you will check and remove any water from the prepared grave prior to burial.
  • You will ensure the paths that the funeral cortege will walk are clear of all litter, debris, brash and free from obstructions leading up to and around the grave area.
  • It will be key for you to maintain good relationships with clergy, funeral directors, mourners, and visitors to the cemeteries. Always preserving an appropriate and dignified attitude.
  • After the funeral service, you will backfill the grave removing all excess material and leaving the grave in a safe and clean environment, ready for any floral tributes.
  • You will undertake maintenance of the grounds including grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, pruning and similar tasks.
  • Under the instruction of the supervising officer, you will check headstones for damage and remove or make safe those that are not. From time to time, you will carry out memorial maintenance including foundation works as directed.
  • You will be expected to drive a council vehicle depending on the allocated team and type of tasks to be carried out.
