JOB SUMMARY:

Kennametal Sintec is looking for an exceptional talent to join our technology team in Schongau as we continue to provide innovative products to better serve our customers and advance our organization. Kennametal Sintec has a full capability to manufacture boron nitride related ceramic products from powder, composites, to components. This position reports to our Global Technology organization, works closely with manufacturing, commercial teams, undertakes projects that progress Kennametal technologies. Its mission is to identify, incubate and pilot emerging opportunities, or execute projects and actions leading to the capture of new materials, new products, new processes.
The person in this position will be responsible for executing individual R&D projects; develop and manage existing and future technologies; integration of technology-based systems to improve products and processes; drive cost & efficiency programs to reduce cost of products.
This person need to be capable of working well in a cross functional team where he or she will interface with other operating groups of within and outside Kennametal (i.e. Engineering, Manufacturing, Internal/External customers, External research institutes etc.) globally; identify required resources internally, externally and across disciplines; develop project plans; keep projects on schedule, within budget, meeting the project objectives; direct or support the development of project deliverables and present those deliverables at project meetings; work with Intellectual Property department to secure confidential agreements and ensure new ideas are properly disclosed and patented or kept as trade secret. This role is situated at a manufacturing facility.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS, MS or Ph.D. in Ceramic Eng, Material Science specializing in Inorganic Non-metallic or Ceramics.
  • 3-5 yrs of hands-on experience in ceramic industry.
  • Good familiarity with engineering ceramic processing techniques.
  • Good familiarity with engineering ceramic materials (SiC, Silicon Nitride etc.) is desirable.
  • Experience in statistical data analysis, experimental design and six sigma are desirable.
  • Experience in writing technical reports.
  • Excellent communication skills, coordinating global teams, leadership capability, Good oral and written technical communications skills in German and English. Chinese language skills are helpful.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimize ceramics process technology (powder, blending, sintering, hot pressing, machining etc.) for ceramic product manufacturing.
  • Lead product and process transition from Technology to Manufacturing.
  • Work closely with Manufacturing offering technical support to process problems or customer complaints.
  • Coordinate development trials at offsite labs or at external vendors.
  • Provide expert troubleshooting, and process support to R&D team, and Mfg operations.
  • Work with equipment vendors to jointly develop next generation technology.
  • Represent Kennametal in academia, scout and build suitable partnerships.
