The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is looking for an individual with a passion in Ceramics to join their team and operate a Ceramic Arts Studio at the Christine Sinclair Community Centre. As a Ceramic Technician, you will operate ceramic arts equipment and oversee the studio 3 days a week during the seasonal programs. You will provide technical expertise in operating, maintaining and firing the electric kiln, maintain the ceramic studios in operational condition, monitor cleanliness and security of equipment and tools while assisting with maintenance tasks on the equipment. You will ensure the proper and safe usage of equipment and materials and while ensuring that policies, procedures, regulations, and safety precautions are adhered to. Other responsibilities for this position may include instructing children’s, youth and adult classes as a contract instructor, teaching multiple ceramic methods including hand building and sculpture on the same days as your technician shifts. Performs related work as required.
To qualify, you will need to have completed a two-year diploma in Fine Arts with ceramic specialty plus related technical and instructional experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. This position requires sound knowledge of methods, practices, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the operation of ceramic studios, programs and firing kilns. An incumbent will have sound knowledge of policies, codes and regulations governing ceramic as well as hazards and safety precautions related to work; and teaching methods and effective communication skills focusing on instruction of safety and ceramic skills when teaching groups of students and artists. Furthermore, you will have the ability to support users of all ages engaged in ceramic programs; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts. A Ceramic Technician will have the skill in the use and care of a variety of tools and equipment used in the work and the physical ability to lift to 50lbs. A WHMIS Certification and a First Aid and CPR C Certificate are requirements for this position.
Pay Rate: $31.97 per hour + 12% in lieu of benefits
Location: Christine Sinclair Community Centre with occasional shifts at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts
Schedule: The Ceramic Technician is an auxiliary position. Hours and shifts are dependent on operational requirements and are scheduled by the department on an as needed basis. Typical seasonal shifts are Sunday to Tuesday between the hours of 9am-5:30pm.
