In research and academic programs, the university unites the natural and engineering sciences with the humanities, social sciences and medicine. This wide range of disciplines is a special feature, facilitating interdisciplinarity and transfer of science to society. As a modern employer, it offers attractive working conditions to all employees in teaching, research, technology and administration. The goal is to promote and develop their individual abilities while empowering everyone to reach their full potential. TUD embodies a university culture that is characterized by cosmopolitanism, mutual appreciation, thriving innovation and active participation. For TUD diversity is an essential feature and a quality criterion of an excellent university. Accordingly, we welcome all applicants who would like to commit themselves, their achievements and productivity to the success of the whole institution.
At the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering, the Institute of Process Engineering and Environmental Technology invites applications for the
CHAIR (W3) OF NUCLEAR AND HYDROGEN TECHNOLOGY
to be filled as of April 1, 2026.
Ensuring a safe, sustainable, and reliable energy supply for the future, coupled with a global shift in the paradigm of energy provision, presents new challenges that demand the continuous advancement of CO2-neutral technologies. Hydrogen, as a secondary energy source, along with the utilization of nuclear fission energy and the anticipated advent of nuclear fusion energy, holds significant importance on a global scale. The overarching objectives encompass enhancing the safety features of these energy conversion systems, maximizing resource utilization, optimizing the integration of energy supply infrastructures, and ensuring a sustainable supply and disposal process (circularity).
The research and teaching areas of the chair focus on advanced nuclear reactor systems that provide solutions for both the electricity and the (process) heat markets. This encompasses hydrogen production based on nuclear reactors and the safety of CO2-neutral energy systems. The following fields are represented:
- Advanced nuclear fission and fusion reactors
- Utilizing the training and research reactor AKR-2 for the validation of computational methods and simulation tools, as well as for the development of metrological methods and procedures in medicine, technology, and biology
- Enhancement of the safety features of nuclear facilities, proliferation security, and nuclear forensics
- Process engineering development for the treatment of highly radioactive materials to minimize the amount of final disposal residues and for the efficient use of resources
- Accelerator-based sources of ionizing radiation for scientific and technical applications
- Leveraging the state-of-the-art laser laboratory to develop specific solutions, particularly for high-temperature nuclear applications
- Safety and energy management of hydrogen production systems.
The development and application of artificial intelligence and digitalization methods must be included here.
We would like you to establish a close network of research activities within the university, with the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and the international network of zero-power and research reactors. Active and creative participation in the Competence Center East for Nuclear Technology and in the National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology (OncoRay) is an important component of the appointment. The acquisition of third-party funding and participation in academic self-administration is common practice at the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering, and you will demonstrate your ability and willingness to do so with your application. You (m/f/x) will represent the department in research and teaching within the degree programs Mechanical Engineering, Regenerative Energy Systems, Industrial Engineering and Management as well as in distance learning in close cooperation with all three faculties of the School of Engineering Sciences. Based on the principle that research and teaching form a unit, you share with us the aspiration to continuously develop teaching, for example in reactor physics, the design of nuclear reactors, nuclear measurement technology, etc., while integrating modern didactic concepts. In view of the increasing importance of CO2-neutral energy technologies and technologies for the production of hydrogen, this professorship will play a central role within the climate-neutral energy strategy and in strengthening the Energy, Mobility and Environment research profile line at TU Dresden.
We are looking for someone with an international scientific track record in the fields of reactor physics (experiment, theory and calculation methods), nuclear and thermohydraulic design of nuclear reactors and safety research in energy plants. With your successful scientific work in a current field of the appointment area, your excellent research achievements with high development potential, your experience in teaching with particular didactic skills and your success in acquiring third-party funding, you will be internationally convincing. We are looking for a dynamic, committed and responsible research personality who inspires our students with a high level of motivation, helps to shape the profile of our faculty in a forward-looking way through relevant research experience and is capable of teaching in German and English in the field to be filled. The requirements for appointment, the official duties and the administrative status are governed by §§ 59, 69, 71 of the Act on Higher Education Institutions in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSG) and the Regulations on Duties and Responsibilities of Institutes of Higher Education (HSDAVO).
For further questions, please contact the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Prof. Dr. Michael Beckmann, phone +49 351 463-32786; email: berufungen.mw@tu-dresden.de berufungen.mw@tu-dresden.de.
TUD strives to employ more women in academia and research. We therefore expressly encourage women to apply. The University is a certified family-friendly university and offers a Dual Career Service. We welcome applications from candidates with disabilities. If multiple candidates prove to be equally qualified, those with disabilities or with equivalent status pursuant to the German Social Code IX (SGB IX) will receive priority for employment. If you have any questions about these topics, please contact the Equal Opportunities Officer of the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering (Ms. Stephanie May, phone +49 351 463-33854) or the Representative of Employees with Disabilities (Mr. Roberto Lemmrich, phone +49 351 463-33175).
We look forward to receiving your application by January 31, 2025 (time stamp on the email server or the stamped arrival date of the University Central Mail Service of TUD applies).
Please attach the following documents to your letter of application: curriculum vitae in table form, a synopsis of your academic career, a list of academic publications, a list of courses, results of teaching evaluations covering the last three years, a research and teaching concept, summary of your third-party funding, and a copy of the certificate of your highest academic degree.
We kindly ask you to submit your application by email. Please use the SecureMail Portal of TUD (https://securemail.tu-dresden.de) and send your documents in a single PDF document to: berufungen.mw@tu-dresden.de. If you are applying by regular mail, please also attach your application documents in electronic form (CD or USB thumb drive) and send them to: TU Dresden, Fakultät Maschinenwesen, Dekan, Herrn Prof. Dr.-Ing.
