Description:
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.
Based on the existing social challenges and driven by the goals of sustainable development, the Fraunhofer Institute for Microtechnology and Microsystems IMM in Mainz, as a research and development service provider, focuses a large proportion of its employees on the topics of CLEAN ENERGY, SUSTAINABILITY and HEALTH across the business units ENERGY, CHEMISTRY and DIAGNOSTICS.
In the energy business unit, our interest is focused on current and future issues related to the mobile and decentralized provision and storage of electrical energy and the heat management of our energy generation systems. Currently, our main focus is on the use of methanol and ammonia for hydrogen supply. The technology is based on micro-structured plate heat exchangers that can be used as chemical reactors when coated with catalysts. The development work covers the entire technology chain in the areas of system design, process simulation, catalyst development, service life tests, reactor design, development of cost-effective manufacturing technologies, as well as system control, system integration and system testing. In the catalyst technology group, our focus is on the development of new catalysts, the optimization of existing catalyst formulations with regard to conversion, selectivity and stability, and the coating of these materials on structured surfaces.
