Position Description: The Chief Development Officer is responsible for the strategic direction, development, implementation, and expansion of the organization’s diverse fundraising channels focused on retaining and increasing revenue. Responsible for the solicitation of philanthropic support from corporations, foundations, and individual donors. Manages all aspects of the organization’s resource development & fundraising plans. Establishes and maintains superior donor relations and a balanced mix of donor sources and fundraising programs to attract and retain donors. Responsible for meeting and exceeding measurable revenue goals through workplace giving, major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, affinity groups, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and development services. The Chief Development Officer reports to and works as a partner with the CEO in stewarding key philanthropic relationships. The Chief Development Officer is a model of a Culture of Philanthropy and works in close collaboration with the executive team and members of the Marketing and Community Impact teams to champion the mission and to achieve the fundraising goals of the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:

Solid Educational Background and Experience – bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred in related field or commensurate with experience. Minimum ten (10) years of related experience with a heavy emphasis on effective fundraising, particularly with mid-level and major gifts, grants, capital campaigns, generating and diversifying revenue. ACFRE or CFRE certification preferred. Individual must be self-motivated and goal-driven and able to work with a high degree of independence. Five years of direct executive-level experience managing a development department fostering effective working relationships across different functional areas. Proven work experience in a fundraising environment and a comprehensive knowledge of the science of fundraising, including experience growing fundraising programs. Experience working with volunteers and knowledge of United Way operations. Excellent strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and follow-through. Achievement oriented; shows initiative and enthusiasm while demonstrating uncompromising responsibility, courage, and self-confidence, even in the face of difficulties. Proven experience and confidence in dealing with all levels of leadership, corporate and foundation executives, and high-capacity donors. Must have excellent relationship and communication skills, both oral and written. Proven track record of raising a minimum of $10M dollars plus and achieving revenue goals. Proficient with Microsoft software and utilizing a CRM database.
Leadership - Visionary leader who can develop goals and strategies and productively leverage partnerships for community engagement and contributions. Proven work experience in a fundraising environment and a comprehensive knowledge of the science of fundraising.
Talent Management – Proven experience building and leading a high performing, diverse development/fundraising team. Provide ongoing leadership and support to the Development/Fundraising team to identify future leaders and encourage professional growth. Ensures the team has leadership, skills, tools, resources, and training to be successful. Work with team to set department, and personal goals in support of overall United Way NCA’s vision and community goals. Actively support team members to work with other departments and create cross organizational collaboration.
Results Driven – Dedicated to shared and measurable goals for the common good, creating, resourcing, scaling, and leveraging strategies and innovations. Proven track record of raising significant dollars and achieving revenue goals.
Operational Excellence - Develop, monitor, and manage departmental expense budgets within constraints of United Way NCA’s financial plans. Develop and monitor United Way NCA’s revenue goals and budgets with key managers to meet and exceed organizational and community goals and needs. Identify specific methods and tools to ensure interdepartmental collaboration. Responsible for data gathering, research, and analysis for goal setting and projections, prepares sales reports and other reports as assigned.
Entrepreneurial – A creative, critical thinker, self-motivated. Excellent strategic thinking and problem- solving skills, with attention to detail and follow through. Achievement oriented; shows initiative and enthusiasm while demonstrating uncompromising responsibility, courage, and self-confidence, even in the face of difficulties.

Responsibilities:

Strategic/Executive
Develops and implements a comprehensive, sustainable fundraising plan to retain existing and generate new revenue. Leads and supports the organization including all facets of individual, foundation, and corporate support, planned giving, and other fundraising activities that tie to United Way NCA’s organizational vision and plans.
Develops and sustains relationships across the organization to ensure the department is aligned with the overall strategic plan. Collaborates with the Marketing department to develop effective donor engagement and communication strategies.
Collaborates with relevant area foundations and community groups to encourage and support largescale changes in the greater Washington, DC area by amassing and providing resources for change. Anticipates changes in the fundraising environment to take advantage of opportunities and mitigate the impact of unfavorable trends. Collaborates and liaises with the Board to identify and promote funding opportunities to donors and partners. Leads the Resource Development Committee of the Board. Meets or exceeds all established quarterly and annual revenue objectives.
Revenue Generation
Leads and coordinates the goals, objectives, and work to maximize the organization’s philanthropic revenue streams. Areas include annual campaigns, workplace campaigns, and non-traditional revenue streams. Directs the organization’s efforts to secure support from individual contributors at all levels, including major gifts, leadership gifts, and others.
Directs the efforts to secure corporate support through corporate/foundation giving, sponsorship, and consumer engagement efforts through partners. Personally, manages a robust donor portfolio of transformational and principal gifts prospects (corporations, individual, and foundations). Provides staff donor portfolio support, with a particular emphasis on growing individual giving. As part of the Executive Leadership Team, provides collaborative direction to the organization’s revenue stream innovation work.
Leadership
Builds and manages a successful Resource Development team of eight members along revised objectives and structure to ensure revenue and performance goals and results are achieved. Works with Resource Development team to set department, corporate, and personal goals in support of overall United Way NCA’s vision and community goals. Provides ongoing leadership and support to the Resource Development team to identify future leaders and encourage professional growth. Ensures the Resource Development team has leadership and staff skills, tools, resources, and training to be successful. Develops, monitors, and manages Resource Development departmental expense budgets within the constraints of United Way NCA’s financial plans. Develops and monitors United Way NCA’s revenue goals and budgets with key managers to meet and exceed organizational and community goals and needs. Actively supports successful Resource Development team members to work with other departments to further professional development, provide career paths, and create cross organizational collaboration. Identifies specific methods and tools to ensure interdepartmental collaboration. Responsible for data gathering, research, and analysis for goal setting and projections and prepares progress reports and other reports as assigned. Establishes performance measures, monitors results, and evaluates the efficacy of the fundraising program. Responsible for developing and implementing a solicitation strategy that includes prospect identification, cultivation, proposal writing, and stewardship. Develops, refines, models, and holds team accountable for fundraising and operational policies and procedures. Conducts professional business meetings and interactions. Due to the leadership role at United Way NCA is called upon to play in the community, particularly during times of crisis, it is the expectation that all United Way staff will be fully engaged in the organization’s crisis plan and response efforts. Represents United Way NCA in the community as needed, including occasional nights and weekends.
