Description:

SECONDARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Maintaining the all required records and documentation, ensuring all entries, submissions and statutory requirements therein are fulfilled.
  • The provision of detailed and comprehensive Handover Notes and End of Trip Reports for the relieving Chief Engineer.
  • Accurate, timely and comprehensive Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting.
  • Implementation of the performance management procedure for line managed crew as per the defined process.

Responsibilities:

The Chief Engineer is responsible to the Master for the safe and efficient operation of the Engine Department in compliance with the Company Management System and for keeping the Master informed of any matters that are likely to affect the operation of the vessel in any way, either at the time or in the future.

Principal Accountabilities

  • The safe, efficient running of the Engineering Department. Arranging watches appropriate to the sailing schedule of the vessel. Drawing up a set of standing orders in compliance with the Fleet Operations Procedure specific to that vessel, and ensuring current legislation is complied with.
  • Assessing any breakdown of plant/machinery for repair by ship’s staff and affect such repair work as necessary to put the plant/machinery back into working order.
  • Communicating with the Technical Manager, if a breakdown or repair cannot be completed by ship’s staff, the information on the breakdown required to enable the Technical Manager to organise assistance from outside organisations to assist with the repair of the plant/machinery.
  • Preparing repair work and survey item lists for dry-docking/repair period and maintaining records of such survey work carried out and repairs done on any machinery.
  • Ordering spare parts, stores, fuel and lubrication oils as may be required and to maintain stock levels of spare parts on board sufficient for the safe efficient operation of the ship. Recording fuel and lub. oil consumption’s and document these as required.
  • Ensuring engine room environment and any other machinery spaces are safe working areas.Maintenance and repair of all ship and hotel services’ machinery, including ensuring all OEM maintenance requirements and documentation (e.g. notices and bulletins) are implemented.
  • Familiarising himself with the machinery and equipment and also emergency procedures and operation of the same.
  • Ensuring that safety systems for example fire detection are operational. Fire extinguishing systems - fire main and sprinkler systems’ function in correct manner.
  • Ensuring that passenger and crew accommodation is correctly lit, of comfortable temperature, and ventilation adequate. Maintaining hotel services throughout the ship.
  • Ensuring hydraulic systems - bow ramp/visor, stern ramp, cleaning systems, locking bolts are functioning correctly with indication of these also functioning.
  • Inspecting windlasses/capstans for oil leakage likely to cause injury and rectify faults.
  • Ensuring main and auxiliary machinery maintenance are kept up to date and records of this being done completed. This is to be done with manufacturers’ recommended maintenance in mind, or experience with plant/equipment.
  • Investigating and taking action on any accumulation of oil, oily water mixture in machinery space bilges and ensure correct action is taken to dispose of the oil/oily water mixture through oily water separation equipment and recording such a discharge recorded in Oil Record Book.
  • Ensuring adequate electrical power is available on board for customer services - catering and maintain catering equipment in working order, (galley ranges to vacuum cleaners).
  • Taking charge of documentation relating to Engine Department equipment and machinery.
  • Ensuring garbage and any oil sludge accumulation is disposed of in the correct manner and documented as necessary.
  • Engine room and engineering contract staff supervision - to oversee work carried out by all engineering department staff and any external contractor or wider CFL engineering staff is completed in a satisfactory manner with efficient use of consumable stores and spare parts.
  • Reporting of all technical problems or breakdowns affecting the operation of the vessel.
  • In conjunction with the Technical Manager, ensuring that the structure and machinery of the vessel are maintained in class.
  • Ensuring that the requirements of ISM are adhered to in the operation of his department.
  • Any other duties required by the Master.
