Description:
ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation (″AFN″) is looking for an an experienced and strategic Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The CFO, reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), will oversee the financial management and operations of AFN. In this key leadership role, the CFO will help shape the strategic financial direction of the community, working closely with senior management, finance staff, and the Chief and Council to achieve the long-term vision. The position will also ensure compliance with relevant regulations, including the Indian Act, Indigenous Services Canada’s policies, the First Nations Fiscal Management Act, and address current social and economic challenges.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree coupled with an accounting designation (CPA)
- Registration with the Chartered Professional Accountants of BC (CPABC) or First Nations Financial Management Board (FMB)
- Knowledge of GAAP accounting principles
- Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively more responsible experience, including managing staff
- Experience working with First Nations/Aboriginal/Indigenous communities
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Excellent attention to detail
- Experience developing and implementing efficient financial control processes and strong internal controls for an organization
- Effective analytical skills and experience to provide sound financial direction to senior management based on budget preparation and financial reporting
Responsibilities:
THE PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Leadership & Strategy: Provide strategic financial advice to the CAO, Chief and Council, and Finance Department. Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
- Financial Management: Oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, accounting, and reporting. Ensure compliance with legislation and best practices. Manage annual audits and financial reporting.
- Risk & Investment Management: Identify and mitigate financial risks. Manage investments and assets to optimize returns. Develop and implement financial strategies that align with the organization’s goals.
- Policy & Compliance: Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures. Ensure compliance with financial and human resources legislation. Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support decision-making.
- Audit & Reporting: Lead the annual audit process and ensure accurate and timely financial reporting. Present financial statements to Chief and Council and the community.
- Other duties as required.
