Job Description / Key Responsibilities
The Chief Information Officer has the overall responsibility to ensure that the information technology strategy, policies, processes and practices, in both design and implementation, maximize institutional efficiency and local empowerment.
The CIO is charged with supporting the university in its commitment to build and maintain a smart campus organized around data and a robust and secure physical and digital infrastructure, to facilitate collaboration, creativity, knowledge dissemination and innovation for the full spectrum of University activities, from foundational research to applied technologies, and from support services to senior levels of University management.
Reporting directly to the Vice President (Administration and Finance) for operational issues and in consultation with the Provost and Executive Vice President (Academic) on strategic matters, the CIO is responsible for providing strategic direction, leadership, oversight and vision for McGill’s Information Technology strategy in alignment with the University’s vision and strategic academic plan.

More precisely:

  • Provide optimal support for McGill University’s computing, communication and networking environments. The CIO is responsible for the computing infrastructure in support of administration, providing continuous leadership with innovative efforts to instill information technologies into education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and supporting, where appropriate, research activities.
  • Assist McGill’s faculty, students and staff to, efficiently and effectively, use information technology in learning, teaching, research, and administration.
  • Develop and implement various initiatives and projects to facilitate the integration of information technology into McGill’s strategic planning and implementation. Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend innovative solutions to drive benefits from a $100M+ major project portfolio in areas such as Network and Telephony upgrades, and HR, Finance and Student Information systems evolution.
  • Develop and implement various initiatives relating to cybersecurity, including but not limited to, monitoring and response to cybersecurity threats and incidents, performance of regular cybersecurity assessments, and education of faculty, students and staff on cybersecurity best practices and protocols.
  • Act as a “catalyst” in working with all of the University’s stakeholder to leverage technology in an innovative way in order to advance and support the mission, vision, goals, and objectives of the McGill University.
  • Represent the University at the provincial, national, and international levels on relevant issues.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for a total staff complement of approximately 300 employees with responsibility for overall management of networking and general computing services, business analysis, cybersecurity, project management, architectural planning and application management in support of the University

Professional Experience / Education / Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced degree.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of leadership as an IT executive.
  • Proven experience in managing large complex organizations, with significant responsibility for program, budget and personnel.
  • Ability to communicate in both English and French at the spoken and written levels, a required asset.
  • Record of success in collaboration with a diverse community, aligning and driving results with a large team.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in planning and innovative leadership in the field of information technology in a complex organization.
  • Understanding of trends in information technology, emerging issues in cybersecurity, and issues in higher education is desirable.
  • Experience in a demanding client-centered environment is a definite asset.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and administrative skills are essential, as is a strong commitment to the highest ethical standards.
  • Demonstrated abilities to build and lead partnerships and to develop potential external funding opportunities are valuable resources.
