Description:
Position Summary: The Chief Legal Officer (CLO) reports to the President & CEO and serves on NAF’s Senior Staff as an executive leader of the organization. The CLO will play a critical role in expanding abortion access by developing and leading innovative legal strategies that promote and protect NAF’s mission to serve and unite abortion providers. The successful candidate will be an inspiring leader, bold legal strategist, and trusted adviser to the CEO and other members of the senior leadership team
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Juris doctor (JD) degree, and Twelve (12) to Fifteen (15) years’ related work experience; nonprofit experience is a preferred.
- Knowledge of contract management.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and emotional intelligence.
- Deep knowledge and expertise in reproductive health, rights, and justice.
- Demonstrated experience building, managing, and leading a high-performing team.
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, SharePoint)
- Ability to travel in support of business needs.
Responsibilities:
- In alignment with NAF’s mission and organizational vision, develops innovative legal strategies designed to protect and expand abortion access.
- Rebuilds and grows NAF’s federal policy and advocacy work on behalf of its members and in support of abortion access.
- Ensures execution of general counsel tasks in coordination with senior legal counsel and external counsel; protects NAF and its mission from threats, both internal and external.
- Leads rapid response initiatives to quickly mobilize with internal and external partners to respond to changes in the abortion access landscape at the state and national levels.
- Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with partners to create and coordinates legal resources and support for abortion providers.
- Creates resources and offerings to support members in learning about, considering the implications of, and strategizing about legal shifts in abortion access.
- Prepares and presents legal analysis and information to the Board of Directors.
- With other senior staff, transforms NAF to identify provider and movement needs, creates solutions for access, garner funder support for solutions, and be accountable for successfully implementing solutions.
- Selects, retains, manages, and oversees outside counsel, as necessary, to support NAF’s programmatic and operational needs.
- Provides general oversight to the legal department by hiring, leading, developing, and mentoring staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
