CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER, RWJ UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL SOMERSET
Job Overview: The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for RWJ University Hospital Somerset leads safety and quality improvement efforts with the goal of achieving top clinical and patient-centered outcomes that set the standard in healthcare delivery and innovation. The CMO is responsible for integration and coordination of clinical practice across all service lines, to develop and deploy methods of process improvement designed to enhance and improve clinical quality, patient experience and reduce healthcare costs.
Reports to: The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at RWJ University Hospital Somerset reports directly to the Chief Administrative Officer, RWJ University Hospital Somerset, with a matrixed reporting relationship to the EVP, System Chief Medical and Quality Officer
Qualifications:
- MD or DO degree with a board certification in medicine, surgery or sub specialty
- Eligibility for Medical License in the state of NJ
- Eligibility for a Faculty position in RWJMS
- MBA, or MPH preferred
- 10+ years of experience leading quality programs within an acute care hospital or health system
Essential Functions:
- Provide the overall strategic direction of physician activities including development, implementation, market research and strategic partnerships; and is the physician leader for continuous quality improvement, regulatory compliance, safety and effective clinical resource management
- Drive greater performance and leverage system thinking and creativity to continuously improve clinical quality and safety metrics, employee engagement, patient care services, patient throughput, expense reduction, and managing staffing resources
- Work collaboratively with the executive team to elevate RWJUH Somerset in applicable quality rankings, including CMS Stars, Leapfrog, US News, and Vizient
- In alignment with Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the combined Medical Group, effectively establish and implement a strategy based on academic/ practice partnership guiding principles and best practices
- Oversees quality and patient safety strategies, regulatory, infection control and all performance improvement initiatives
- Improves clinical throughput and all operational processes associated with delivering excellent clinical care
- Ensures that Medical Staff activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, laws governing business operations, and requirements of accreditation agencies
- Maintains strong physician relations and provides support services to physicians
- Collaborates with medical staff to develop and implement new clinical systems/programs to enhance existing services
- Fosters clinical integration across the continuum of patient care services provided by the hospital, medical school and the health system
- Responsible for allocating adequate resources and implementing an effective and ongoing program to monitor, evaluate and improve the quality of care services delivered to patients,
- Ensures that services are provided with respect to quality, patient and stakeholder requirements, and efficiency
- Establish a plan to address resource allocation, operational performance as measured by quality, service, cost and growth
- Develop and implement strategy, in partnership with executive clinical leaders to achieve quality and safety results including zero defects while maintaining and integrating High Reliability Organization HRO principles
- Assure the highest standards of healthcare delivery and outcomes, ensuring a constant patient focus
- Partner with internal and external stakeholders, including community organizations, governmental agencies, and other healthcare providers, to advance health equity goals. Advocate for policies and practices that reduce health disparities and promote equitable access to high-quality care.
