WHY KATHERINE WEST HEALTH BOARD

Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) is currently looking for a Child Health Program Coordinator this position will be well suited to someone who is a Registered nurse or Aboriginal health practitioner with extensive experience working with children in remote health environments. With an understanding of Aboriginal cultural values, and commitment to the advancement and self-determination of Aboriginal communities.
Established in 1998, Katherine West Health Board is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation that provides a range of clinical, preventative and public health services to clients in the Katherine West Region of the Northern Territory. With four major health care centres and a range of satellite centres, KWHB services an area over two times the size of Tasmania (162,000km²), helping to improve the health and wellbeing of some of the most remote communities in Australia.

Responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE (BUT NOT LIMITED TO):

  • Provide quality primary health care to children, young people and their families, with a focus on driving strong health outcomes for children and young people aged 5-17 years of age.
  • Promote, support, and empower clients and families using culturally secure practice and culturally appropriate resources to optimise child health outcomes.
  • Collaborate closely with the Strong Beginnings for Strong Families nurses to smoothly transition children aged five and their families from the Strong Beginnings for Strong Families service program to the provision of ongoing child health supports.
  • Provide leadership in child health across multidisciplinary teams to ensure a high-quality holistic approach to the delivery of child health care in the region.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities for the child health program to ensure the provision of high-quality care to children in the region.
  • Participate in health promotion as outlined in KWHB health promotion strategy.

IS THE ROLE RIGHT FOR YOU?

  • Demonstrated understanding of the issues affecting the health and wellbeing of children and their families who live in remote Australia, particularly the Katherine region.
  • Understanding of the CARPA guidelines and the evidence supporting these guidelines and a willingness to demonstrate leadership in the use of these guidelines.
  • Ability to identify priority areas based on health surveillance data.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with Aboriginal people and in a cross cultural setting.
  • Ability to show leadership in the area of child health to the multidisciplinary team through guidance, education, training and support.
  • Willingness to promote the use of the KWHB patient information and record system to record collect and analyse client information.
  • Demonstrated high level and effective verbal and written communication skills.
