Description:

The Havens is London’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) service, provided by Kings College Hospital, and delivered currently from three sites, Camberwell, Whitechapel and St Charles Hospital, Ladbroke Grove. The service is jointly commissioned by NHS England specialised commissioning Health in the Justice Team and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC). We are recruiting a Band 5 Children’s and Young Persons Nurse.
The Havens provide a 24/7 emergency forensic medical examination service for the whole of London for both police and self-referred clients. Follow-up medical and sexual health services, an independent sexual violence adviser (ISVA) team and counselling and clinical psychology services are offered and provided. Additionally, the service has its own specialist children’s team.

The Havens work closely with NHSE, MOPAC, the Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS); and is part of a formal partnership with London’s main third sector sexual violence providers, known as the London Survivors Gateway.

  • Have experience of working with children and young people in a trauma informed setting.
  • Experience in sexual or adolescent health.
  • Provide telephone support and guidance to people who have been sexually assaulted.
  • Excellent communication skills, a flexible approach and knowledge of the impact of sexual assault.
  • Genuine commitment to working with our client group is critical, and may involve staying late on occasions.
  • To support and maintain a ‘Centre of Excellence’ providing emotional, practical and safeguarding support to children and young people following serious sexual assault/abuse, and includes the offer of forensic medical examination, adolescent and child sexual abuse clinic appointment, addressing contraceptive and sexual health needs and emotional support.
  • To support parents, carers, children, young people, and professionals by helping them to navigate systems related to the recent sexual assault or non-recent sexual abuse.
  • To support the CYP Haven teams with the delivery of a seamless and robust 0-19 acute and non-acute service.
  • To support the wider Haven team with maintaining a safe environment and work as part of The Havens’ multidisciplinary team alongside the children and young person, safe parents, carers, and their support networks to ensure that their needs are properly understood and met.
  • To maintain stock and resources for children and young people.
  • To support with clinic preparation and chaperoning as and when needed.
  • To support with maintaining accurate databases of services supporting (Pan London) for CYP victims of sexual assault/abuse.
  • To support with collating CYP in/out of hours teams rota’s.
  • To support with maintaining CYP data spreadsheets.
  • To support with high standards of infection control procedures.

Processing referrals and telephone enquiries.
Support with clinic appointments, chaperoning Paediatricians in clinics, including completing relevant paperwork, labelling and bagging of samples and transporting to the laboratory.
Preparing clinical resources (across CYP medical, advocacy, nursing)
Ensure toys, leaflets, and other items needed to support the smooth running of the service is maintained by Pan Haven.
To provide advocacy support to children, young people and their carers throughout their Haven journey.
To ensure all actions undertaken are consistent with the wishes of the child, young person and their carer.
To ensure clinical and public areas are adequately stocked with clinical supplies, stationery and client information.
Ensuring good standards of care for the client are maintained at all times.
Adhering to NMC Code of Professional conduct at all times.
Involving and supporting clients, relatives, carers and friends in the care process.
Promoting well-being and involving clients and relatives in health education.
Ensuring clear and accurate written and verbal information is given at all times.
Ensuring contemporaneous record keeping at all times.
Seeking advice from more senior/experienced members of staff where appropriate.
Liaising effectively with all members of the MDT to ensure clients’ needs are met.
Exercising leadership and taking the initiative where appropriate.
Providing support and advice to Haven staff (especially junior staff) on clinical and administrative issues.
Keeping the line manager/nurse specialist informed of significant changes and/or anticipated problem
