DESCRIPTION

Our Youth and Government Program is in need of passionate, talented Advisors for the model legislative program. The role of the Advisor is equal parts mentor, teacher, and confidant. Advisors play a critical role in the Arizona Youth & Government Program. The key roles of an Advisor include attending regular delegation meetings, mentoring delegates as they prepare for the conference, and supervising at all conferences. Our Advisors develop close bonds with many of our delegates and see just how much Y&G impacts them firsthand. Youth and Government is first a youth development program that offers young people the opportunity to experience personal development in a positive and safe environment. Secondly the program aims to help youth understand the importance of civic engagement and civil discourse, and to understand first-hand how our democracy works in practice.

REQUIREMENTS TO BE A CIVIC HEALTH CHAMPION:

  • Must enjoy working with youth.
  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Must be employed by a public, charter, or private Middle, or High school
  • Ability to effectively communicate information with participants, parents and supervisors
  • Must be observant, safety conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency
  • Ability to think in the abstract, solve problems, and make quick decisions under stress.
  • Immediately notifies the appropriate staff of any issues with delegation
  • Develop a schedule of meeting times and dates
  • Attending all delegation meetings
  • Prepare a calendar with projected dates for accomplishing specific tasks
  • Provide information and assistance to the delegates as they prepare for conferences
  • Coordinate all administrative paperwork (registration, Code of Conduct, etc.)
  • Disseminate all information received from the State Director.
  • Accompany the delegation to all conferences.
  • Ensure students are adhering to the Code of Conduct at all times.
  • Attend one Valley of The Sun YMCA Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training.

Responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A CIVIC HEALTH CHAMPION:

  • Provide training and experience in understanding the legislative process
  • Develop critical thinking and analytical abilities
  • Deliver hands-on role modeling in the legislative process
  • Empower students to develop interpersonal communication skills
  • Instill awareness of social issues and their possible solutions
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and offers opportunities to hear and respect varying viewpoints
  • Encourage active participation in political and public affairs
  • Academic enhancement through the development of research and reading/writing skills
  • Attending delegation meetings
  • Prepare a calendar with projected dates for accomplishing specific tasks, using the suggested agenda items in the provided handbook
  • Provide information and assistance to the delegates as they prepare for conferences
  • Coordinate all administrative paperwork and maintains records as required (registration, Code of Conduct, etc.)
  • Disseminate all information received from the State Director
  • Attend all meetings and events, Accompany/chaperone the delegation to all conferences
  • Ensure students are adhering to the Code of Conduct at all times
  • Attend one Valley of The Sun YMCA Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training
  • Follows all policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures
  • Serves as a role model to participants and lives the vision and values of the YMCA movement
  • Create a mission-based environment which enables everyone to be engaged in the YMCA movement.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attend required abuse risk management training.
  • Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.a. Maintenance employees and volunteers—ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked;routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker-rooms and bathrooms), etc.b. Front desk personnel—ensure consumers are properly signed in and signed out, ensuresonly authorized adults are allowed in the facility, etc.
