Description
The Department of Civil Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Civil Engineering Technical Specialist for approximately 10 months.
This position reports to the Undergraduate Lab Manager, SSE Technical Services, and requires strong analytical, communication, organizational, and technical skills. The primary responsibility is to support undergraduate and research laboratories within Civil Engineering. Additionally, the role involves mentoring and supporting graduate students and faculty within specialized research laboratories. The position extends technical support across other areas of the civil engineering undergraduate and graduate programs, as needed. There is a high impact of error, necessitating careful attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols when working with potential hazards, such as cranes, forklifts, and large equipment.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Undergraduate Laboratory Technical Support
- Set up equipment and experiments in the civil engineering undergraduate laboratories.
- Provide practical instruction in civil engineering undergraduate laboratories.
- Contribute to the planning, development, and monitoring of new laboratory experiments.
- Acquire, maintain, upgrade, or replace laboratory equipment to ensure functionality and readiness before scheduled labs.
- Maintain efficient, safe, and well-organized laboratories for students.
- Order and manage inventory of laboratory materials and supplies.
- Schedule and coordinate the inventory and disposal of capital equipment.
Equipment and Safety
- Configure, maintain, and operate specialized equipment, including testing systems, laboratory apparatus, and associated infrastructure (e.g., computer operations, electronics, data acquisition systems).
- Operate heavy equipment such as cranes, forklifts, genie lifts, and scissor lifts.
- Use various tools, including pneumatic equipment, saws, drill presses, and others as necessary.
- Ensure compliance with safety, fire, and health regulations in the laboratories.
- Train undergraduate and graduate students on standard operating procedures (SOPs) within laboratories.
- Regularly maintain and update laboratory hazard assessments and SOP manuals.
- Respond to equipment malfunctions and emergencies.
Civil Engineering Research Technical Support
- Train and mentor graduate students on the safe and effective operation of equipment and laboratory protocols.
- Assist in the planning, development, and monitoring of new experiments, infrastructure, and spaces in research laboratories.
- Provide responsible supervision and management of research laboratories.
- Maintain efficient, safe, and organized laboratories for students and researchers.
- Stay informed about current and future technical trends in the industry and apply this knowledge as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
- A Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and industry experience is required.
- Experience in the construction industry is considered an asset.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with knowledge in computing, electronics, and instrumentation.
- Working knowledge of laboratory testing and analysis techniques.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively.
- Strong interpersonal and analytical skills, with excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook.
- Ability to lift and push heavy objects.
- Work at heights as required.
- A valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
