Job Description
- Assist students on a daily basis with multiple individual and group needs in order to promote their success in an academic setting and re-integration to community school
- Assess and identify daily and ongoing needs using appropriate methods relative to housing, employment, health and any other challenge or social/emotional barrier to academic success
- identify potential safety concerns and risks among students individually or as a group and use non-violent crisis intervention and/or harm reduction techniques (situation dependent)
- Liaise and update relevant partners as needed including but not limited to Probation, NRAC primary workers, guardians, CAS etc.
- Provide additional therapeutic programming through psycho-educational or skill based groups relating to identified risk factors such as substance missuse/abuse or mental health care
- supervise students during classroom academic and break times and intervene accordingly
Qualifications
- Post secondary degree in Psychology with a combined Chemical Dependency Counselling Certificate or similar program from an accredited University or College program and licensed through the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation (CACCF) (annual renewal)
- Preference will be given to a person with knowledge and experience in Medical Model of Addiction, Harm Reduction Approach and the Abstinence Approach; Collaborative Problem Solving, Motivational Interviewing Techniques, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy; and training or demonstrated experience in Violence Threat Risk Assessment (V-TRA by the Canadian Council for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response for school settings)
- Minimum of three (3) years demonstrated experience working with youth in addictions programs
- Understanding of working with high risk youth population and development framework; understanding of Youth Justice, child welfare systems and the impacts on the client system(s) and ability to work in multidisciplinary practice.
- Police Record Clearance and Vulnerable Sector Screening is required. NVCI, CPR, First Aid Certificate, immunization record, medical clearance, a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required prior to working directly with clients. Will be expected to work irregular hours as required by client or program needs, which include evenings and weekends
