Job Description:
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority ( Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reporting to the Manager, Cardiac Rehabilitation, assesses participants’ exercise capacity and provides and implements exercise prescriptions based on results of patient’s exercise stress test or metabolic tests and clinical status; evaluates patients’ response to exercise. Provides education to patients and their families and other health care professionals. Provides mentorship, education and clinical supervision for undergraduate and graduate students. As a member of the team consults with and maintains ongoing communication with all team members and the community at large, participates in team business and planning for the program.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a recognized university program in Physiotherapy. Current licensure in a practicing category with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC as a Physiotherapist. Eligible for membership in the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA). Masters degree in exercise physiology or related health science preferred. Two (2) years of recent related experience as a clinical exercise physiologist in a cardiac and/or respiratory rehabilitation environment, including evaluating and interpreting clinical data, conducting exercise sessions, responding to complication, modifying exercise for cardiopulmonary limitations, prescribing aerobic and strength exercise, working with exercise equipment and directing exercise leaders. Certification with the American College Sports Medicine (ACSM) as an exercise specialist certification. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification. Comprehensive knowledge of cardiovascular and pulmonary disease process, common complications. Understanding of VIHA cardiac resources is required.

  • Knowledge of 12 lead ECG interpretation and arrhythmia interpretation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with patients, families, team members and the community.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others.
  • Ability to physically carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to prioritize an organize work.
  • Ability to teach and lead group sessions.
  • Ability to identify learning needs and develop educational programs.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and utilization of adult education principles and motivational techniques.
  • Ability to coach and counsel individuals and families.
  • Ability to assess cardiovascular status and symptoms of heart failure, cardiovascular, or pulmonary distress.
  • Ability to work within the prescribed policies, guidelines and directives.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, including computers.
