Summary:
The Lower Mainland Biomedical Engineering (LMBME) consolidated group under Providence Health Care (PHC) is currently hiring for a permanent, full-time Clinical Engineer who will specialize in supporting our Radiology Service group.
The Clinical Engineer applies recognized technology management principles to provide leadership and management for projects, strategic planning, resource planning and utilization, capital equipment planning, risk management, patient safety and quality improvement. The Clinical Engineer partners with biomedical engineering staff, clinical leaders, medical leaders, capital acquisitions, foundations, external regulatory and standards agencies, medical technology vendors and manufacturers and other key leaders and staff across the Organizations. The Clinical Engineer also works with other Biomedical Engineering departments in BC outside of the Lower Mainland on shared initiatives to advance the delivery of biomedical engineering services. The Clinical Engineer also coordinates and supervises the work of Biomedical Engineering Technologists and other staff as it relates to various projects and assignments.

  • You will be required to provide proof of current registration or eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) to be considered for this role.

    What You Bring:

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Applied Science with a focus in Biomedical Engineering plus three (3) to five (5) years’ recent engineering/technical experience including experience in Biomedical Engineering in a hospital environment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Current registration or eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Comprehensive knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Sound knowledge of CSA standards, the Canadian Electrical Code and Health Canada regulations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health sciences.
  • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Proficiency in the operation of a broad range of electronic test equipment and medical instruments.
  • Demonstrated leadership and accountability skills.
  • Demonstrated information technology (IT) knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work, set objectives and priorities, and manage major concurrent projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to research, report and teach technical information and skills.

LMBME - WHO WE ARE:

Lower Mainland Biomedical Engineering focuses primarily on health care technology management by providing a wide range of technical and engineering expertise. Under Providence Health Care, LMBME serves four health organizations in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia:

  • Fraser Health Authority (FHA)
  • Providence Health Care (PHC)
  • Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA)
  • Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)

LMBME acts as the technology resource and manages medical devices throughout their entire life cycle; starting from the planning for purchase and development of specifications stage, through the purchasing, implementation, maintenance, and finally, end of life and disposition stage. LMBME’s 190+ technologists support more than 100,000 medical devices spread across 27 major hospitals and additional sites such as correctional facilities, dialysis units, etc.
LMBME also plays a key role in technology management related to patient safety. It conducts medical equipment incident investigations, monitors medical equipment recalls and alerts, and identifies potential hazards with medical technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Project & Resource Management: Leads and coordinates projects, resource planning, and capital equipment planning, ensuring alignment with departmental and organizational objectives and the effective use of resources.
  • Risk & Safety Management: Oversees risk management activities, including incident investigations and compliance with safety standards, integrating findings from regulatory bodies into risk management and patient safety protocols.
  • Technical Consultation & Collaboration: Acts as a technical consultant, collaborating closely with clinical and administrative leaders on the safe and effective use of medical equipment, while fostering strong links with clinical support teams.
  • Technology Evaluation & Strategic Planning: Engages in capital and technology planning, assesses emerging medical technologies, and works with vendors to evaluate and implement solutions that meet clinical and organizational needs.
