Description:

An opportunity has arisen for a fixed term Clinical Perfusionist to fill a fixed term position within the Clinical Perfusion Department at UHNM.
The successful applicant will have full UK registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion & have at least three years experience post qualification or is able to demonstrate suitable exposure .
There is the possibility of some flexibility with the start and end date of this fixed term contract. Please contact the department if you wish to discuss.
To clinically manage and control the temporary replacement of a patient’s cardiopulmonary function to enable cardiac surgery and to support that function during other interventions. To operate auxiliary equipment for the benefit of patient safety and the effectiveness of clinical outcome. To assist in the development and management of the Department of Clinical Perfusion. They will be expected to perform these duties to a high level of clinical skill and knowledge. Participate in the “on call” and late duty rotas

Choose the most appropriate equipment and disposable items for the procedure to be undertaken.
Prepare equipment and disposable items to undertake cardiopulmonary bypass for routine and emergency cardiac surgery.
Operate the heart lung machine and auxiliary equipment in order to maintain the patient’s clinical condition within physiological parameters, taking corrective action to compensate for changing conditions during cardiopulmonary bypass.
Prepare equipment and disposable items to perform autologous blood salvage procedures both intra and post operatively for cardiac and other surgical specialities.
Prepare and operate the equipment necessary for the insertion of intra-aortic balloon catheters and the continuing management of the balloon pump during the period of counter pulsation support. Troubleshooting when required.
Undertake and interpret blood gas analysis.
Undertake and interpret Thromboelastopgraphy Testing including Platelet Mapping and Fibrinogen Analysis where necessary.
To set up and operate the relevant monitoring and safety devices.
Prepare and operate equipment and disposables to perform vacuum assisted venous drainage.
Prepare and operate equipment and disposables to perform carbon dioxide flushing of the operative field.
Modify the extra corporeal circuit in order to facilitate haemoconcentration and modified ultra-filtration.
Disassembly and disposal of all used consumable equipment in accordance with Trust and departmental guidelines.
Observe recognised surgical standards of aseptic technique at all appropriate times.
Maintain, clean and calibrate equipment, keeping relevant departmental records.
Assist in the development and subsequent assessment of appropriate evaluation techniques for new equipment and techniques.
Participate in any research and development projects, assisting in their initiation and control.
Ensure there are adequate stock levels in all clinical areas, ordering additional stock when required.
Conduct informal in-service and external formal educational and training sessions with other Perfusionists, nursing and medical staff, when required.
Complete accurately the relevant departmental and clinical records, providing any statistical and administrative information as required.
Job Specific Duties
Directly supervise trainee perfusionists, assisting in the development of the departmental training programmes.
Act as a mentor to the trainee perfusionist, ensuring all relevant personal logs and training documentation is completed.
Ensure the blood gas analyser is quality controlled and maintained, delegating when necessary.
Assist in ensuring all equipment is regularly maintained and serviced, reporting any failures and problems are reported to the relevant people.
Research unusual patient conditions and the development of relevant perfusion techniques for those pathologies.
Actively participate in the development of departmental procedures and protocols.
Liase with consultant clinicians, nursing and perfusion staff in the assessment and application of new techniques and equipment to ensure the best clinical outcomes and improvement in patient care.
Deputise for the Deputy Clinical Manager when required.

Maintain effective and supportive relationships with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
Conversant with all relevant departmental and Trust protocols.
