About us
This role sits within the Department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience at King’s College London Denmark Hill campus.
We work closely with staff at King’s College Hospital and the UK MND RI to ensure the projects deliver useful outcomes to the patient community.
About the role
The research fellow will provide clinical research and clinical trials support to our portfolio of motor neurone disease (MND) research studies (commercially sponsored and academic led).
You will be part of the MND research and clinical trials team and will work with the MND Clinical Trials Team (Consultants: Prof Ammar Al-Chalabi, Dr Jemeen Sreedharan, Dr James Bashford and the clinical trials team led nurse by the Senior ALS trials manager Ms Theresa Chiwera).
Your primary role will be to manage and undertake assessments and dosing in Phase 1 gene therapy trials and Phases 2- 3 clinical trials involving people with MND. The clinical trials will involve patient ascertainment, consent and enrolment in trials including gene therapies. You will be involved in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating expert research care and provide support to patients attending the King’s Motor Neuron Disease (MND) Care and Research Centre who have been or have the potential to be recruited onto a clinical trial programme. You will play a key role in ensuring that any research undertaken within the department safeguards the well-being of patients and is conducted according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trial) Regulations 2004 and Amended Regulations 2006. In conjunction with the other members of the team, you will facilitate the production of good quality research. We anticipate that there will be the option to undertake a parallel research project that relates to biomarker development and/or drug therapies in ALS. You will be encouraged to submit work for publication in journal articles and present at international conferences.
We are looking for a highly motivated, hard-working clinical trainee at Senior House Office or Specialist Registrar level, who can work independently but also interact creatively within the team. Clinical trial work experience or evidence of a passionate curiosity about science and a commitment to deliver new therapies for patients with neurodegenerative disorders is required.
This is a part-time post (20 Hours per week / 0.5 fte), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 12 months. We will consider requests for full-time working (40 hours /1.0 fte).
