POSITION DESCRIPTION

We are currently looking for a Research Assistant to assist with clinical research in the Department of Ophthalmology. This is an onsite position at the Hospital for Sick Children.
In this role you will help Ophthalmologists and trainees with their clinical research projects, this includes coordinating patient recruitment and data collection, study administration, preparing consents and paperwork required by the Research Ethics Board, and organizing data entry and analysis. You will also help prepare study results, including presentations, progress reports, and manuscripts. Also, facilitate external department eye exams needed for clinical research studies.

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with research team members across SickKids and within the Eye Clinic.
  • Collate research proposals (from within and outside departments) and scientific feasibility operations forms to be presented at ophthalmology Research Committee meetings.
  • Keep a database of all research projects within the department of ophthalmology and update every 3 months.
  • Screen all incoming departmental research proposals for any duplicity with existing research.
  • Coordinate and assist with the annual Ophthalmology Research competition
  • Assist Principal Investigators (PIs) in new research proposals, protocols, grant applications, reports manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Prepare and submit Research Ethics Board (REB) applications for ophthalmologists and trainees.
  • Read and have a general knowledge of protocol and study measures.
  • Assist PIs. with the science review process.
  • Develop informed consent documents based on regulations, REB consent templates and institutional requirements.
  • Assist PIs with annual REB approvals and amend protocols and consents as required.
  • Provide information and documentation for potential protocol patients (consents, patient eligibility items, required pre-study testing and roadmaps).
  • Maintain research documents which include original consent forms, patient protocol documentation, general correspondence, and case report forms.
  • Recruitment and consent of participants
  • Encourage and foster collaborative relationships with the healthcare team at SickKids, other participating centers and government and community agencies.
  • Participate in audits, site visits and monitoring by SickKids and other regulatory bodies or industry sponsors.
  • Conduct literature reviews and keep current with study literature.
  • Attend relevant departmental meetings or rounds to increase knowledge and understanding.
  • Keep abreast of regulations and policies governing clinical research and communicate to research team members (e.g., Tri-council Policy Statement, ICH Guidelines, Good Clinical Practices, and Health Canada).
  • Provide support to local research team members.
