Description:

The Research Nurse/Clinical Trials Practitioner is an autonomous specialist working within the multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will take responsibility for the co-ordination and management of a clinical research portfolio comprising of in-house, national and international phase I, II, and III clinical trials. There are posts available in both cellular therapies and paediatric/TYA oncology and haematology.
Responsibilities will include education of patients and colleagues, coordination of care of patients on trials, collection and preparation of biological samples, collection of trial data and monitoring of the expected and unexpected side effects of drugs and other treatment modalities.
The post holder will be expected to develop specialized skills and knowledge relating to the conduct of clinical trials, the therapies and the relevant disease sites. The post holder will be expected to have sufficient skills to enable patients to make informed choices concerning their involvement in clinical trials by providing advice and information and acting as the patient’s advocate.

The post is clinically based to support research in all oncology and haematological malignancies, and post holders will be expected to provide cross cover for members of the team.

  • Work clinically to support the running of clinical trials across the Paediatric and Teenage/Young Adult portfolio as per GCP
  • Work with other members of the research team including Research Nurses, Clinical Trial Practitioners and Data Managers
  • Function in a collaborative role within the MDT to provide expertise in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of clinical trial protocols
  • Participate in identifying potential patients
  • Evaluate eligibility of potential patients and ensure all pre-study tests are undertaken and reviewed
  • Act as patient advocate and assist in obtaining informed consent
  • Register/randomise patients
  • Provide general written and verbal information to patients and families on the concept of clinical trials and detailed education regarding the objectives, rationale, treatment and investigations, side effects and follow-up for specific clinical trials.
  • Where appropriate provide direct patient care within the expanded role of clinical trials (e.g. advanced history taking, toxicity and response evaluation skills, administration of experimental agents, etc)
  • Document patient information in the medical notes
  • Schedule and complete study assessments
  • Collect and prepare biological samples as per protocol
  • Training of other members of the team
  • Assist with set up and co-ordination of trials
  • Consult with Principal Investigators and Sponsors in the development and delivery of trials

Cancer Services sits within the Surgery and Cancer Board. It incorporates comprehensive outpatient, day care, and ambulatory care and inpatient services for the specialities of inpatient and outpatient oncology and Haematology.
The Cancer Clinical Trials Unit office is based in 250 Euston Rd and comprises of three main areas: Haematology, Oncology and Paediatric Oncology and it supports activity in the local Clinical Research Facility and the North Thames Local Comprehensive Research Network and Experimental Cancer Centre. Each group comprises teams of research nurses, clinical trial practitioners and data managers and provides support to local Investigators wishing to conduct clinical trials and other high quality clinical research projects within UCLH. Each team supports a process for agreeing a portfolio of research and ensures that trials are conducted to the highest standards and in accordance with UK legislation and the R&D Governance Framework. The aim of the Unit is to effectively use resources so as to ensure that patients have access to entry into clinical trials, as appropriate, and maintain the highest quality of care for patients
