Description:

JOB SUMMARY:

  • To manage St Bernard’s Ward, support patients, relatives and staff through the provision of clinical, managerial and educational excellence.
  • To work in partnership with all staff members including the Directorate Nurse Manager, CNM3, Director of Nursing, Clinical Director /Specialty Consultants and the inter/trans-disciplinary teams to maintain , develop and improve patient centered, quality, safe care.
  • To play a pivotal role in the co-ordination and management of activity and resources associated with St Bernard’s ward.
  • To support the nursing expanding role to become more expert, competent reflective practitioners developing skills to meet patients’ needs and co-ordinate the acute service with nurse specialists/practitioners.
  • To adhere and maintain organisation, Directorate and Nursing Metrics and KPI’s.

Responsibilities:

THE POST HOLDER’S MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY ROLE IS TO:

  • Develop strategies and service goals for the Ward in line with organisational, Directorate, Nursing Metrics and KPI’s.
  • Work in co-operation with the Directorate Nurse Manager/CNM3 and the hospital in general.
  • Provide good leadership and vision and facilitate team building and planned care within the Ward.
  • Support and develop a philosophy of nursing that underpins the development of the nurse’s role in nursing and the hospital ethos within the Ward.
  • Promote and maintain the highest quality standard of patient focused care.
  • Participate in the overall resource planning, including the assessment of priorities. Implement and evaluate service plans in conjunction with clinical leads.
  • Communicate information on nursing activity and related matters to the Directorate Nurse Manager/CNM3.
  • Develop a shared sense of commitment and participation amongst staff in change management in responding to the health care needs.
  • Ensure and arrange duty rosters as to have the appropriate level of staffing and skill mix for each shift, also ensure compliance with contracted working hours and Landsdowne Road Agreement (LRA).
  • Ensure availability and maintenance of supplies and life support equipment on a 24 hour basis.
  • Effectively communicate with Patient Flow Department and others as appropriate to ensure efficient admission, transfer and discharge arrangements are followed. Engage with the Information Management Board – and encourage staff compliance with updating this system.
  • Be self-aware and ensure staff are informed of procedures to follow in the event of major incident.
  • Audit current nursing practice and promote and improvement culture in respect of the quality, safety and effectiveness of patient care.
  • Always work to promote staff morale and contribute to the recruitment and retention process.
  • Always promote nursing values, and demonstrate support for CNS’s & ANP’s role.
