Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for up to three 8-month co-op positions of Co-op Student Construction Inspector Assistant, with Design and Construction of Public Works.

The Construction Inspector Assistant is responsible to work under the direction of the Senior Construction Inspectors and assisting Construction Inspectors in the preparation and inspecting of work on Capital Infrastructure Works Projects including but not limited to renewal of or new construction of sidewalks, curb and gutter, asphalt pavement, retaining walls, traffic signals and bridges.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Students attending University towards completing a degree in Civil Engineering. Other Engineering disciplines may be considered.

Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to work with limited supervision;
  • Experience or knowledge in municipal infrastructure construction would be an asset;
  • Valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License, Class 5 and must have reliable vehicle available for use on a daily basis. Use of vehicle is currently paid at $0.5838 per kilometer of travel plus parking and bridge fares, while on HRM business.

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.
WORK STATUS: Temporary, full time (8-month co-op work term). Applications for a 4-month co-op work term (May-August) may also be considered.
HOURS OF WORK: Normal hours are 8:30am-4:30pm Monday to Friday however, must be available to occasionally work extended hours on evenings and/or weekends when necessary.
SALARY: Based on your year of study from $22 per hour, plus 4% vacation paid on each pay.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the field inspection and monitoring of work done by contractors.
  • Review project design and construction plans and specifications.
  • Attends project pre-tender review and pre-construction meetings.
  • Records pre-construction conditions with still camera and/or digital video camera.
  • Records work done in daily diary and on record drawings.
  • Checks grade and alignment of curbs, sidewalks, pipes and asphaltic pavement.
  • Takes field measurements to determine quantities of work completed.
  • Assists in preparing monthly progress payments for contracted work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned from time to time.
