Description:

Located in the heart of the Niagara Region – just minutes from one of the world’s most well-known tourism destinations – Niagara College offers more than 130 innovative programs between our campuses in Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Since opening its doors in 1967, Niagara College has grown to become a leader in education and training and one of the most enterprising colleges in Canada.
Applications are invited for a College Nurse, in the Student Services Division located at the Welland campus. The salary range is $41.12/hour to $47.67/hour (Payband J) for a 35-hour workweek. Usual hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm daily however some flexible scheduling of hours and campus location is necessary to accommodate students and the College community. This is an Appendix D, temporary position as per Article 17.3.1 of the Support Staff Collective Agreement and is set to commence in October, 2024 and will conclude in May, 2026. It may be subject to an extension by mutual agreement of the parties.
Reporting to the Director, Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services, Welland Campus, the College Nurse is responsible for providing on-campus and remote health care to the College community in the following ways: health assessments including mental health assessments, preventative health care, health education, health counselling, first aid and emergency assistance in accordance with legislative requirements and College policy. The Nurse assists the College in ensuring legislative and contractual health requirements are met by students prior to commencing academic placements, maintains a confidential health record system and participates on internal and external committees representing Niagara College’s Health Services. As the health practitioner on-site, an extremely high degree of independent judgement, problem solving and ethical decision-making is required in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered Nurse and a member in good standing with current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Community College Diploma in Nursing (3-year) is required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in progressive community nursing.
  • Experience working independently, preferably in an adult educational environment.
  • Candidates will possess CPR and First Aid Certification and have excellent clinical, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Advanced training or certification in mental health or public health nursing as well as computer literacy are assets.
  • A demonstrated ability to provide emergency as well as routine medical interventions, work collaboratively with the college community and take a leadership role in matters of college health and safety and wellness are additional requirements for this position.
  • As duties may include travel to other campuses, community and health agencies, reliable transportation is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides health counselling for prevention of illness and enhancement of health including mental health
  • Monitors and provides compliance of students and staff with legislated immunization requirements for field placements
  • Administers medication as per physician directives,
  • Acts as on-campus professional health consultant to College,
  • Participates in student success by attending college events, developing and implementing service evaluation and student satisfaction measures and maintaining a positive multi-disciplinary team (R.N.’s, Counsellors and Physicians) environment.
