Job Description
Job Title: Commodity Manager
Department: Materials
Reports To: Purchasing Manager
Shift/Schedule: Office Hours

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Commodity Manager is accountable for end-to-end materials management relating to the planning, procurement, storage, control, and distribution of materials and products to meet company objectives and customer requirements for assigned commodities/product lines. This may involve directing/administering and or influencing company policy related to purchasing, planning, inventory management, production scheduling and shipping and receiving activities. This commodity manager will also participate in projects and special assignments as required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • A. or B.S. in Business, Supply Chain/Logistics, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years in a manufacturing environment with at least five years in purchasing.
  • Strong working knowledge of sourcing and procurement techniques as well as an aptitude for reading the market.
  • Demonstrated enactment of cost savings initiatives.
  • Exceptional talent in communication, negotiating and networking.
  • Proficient with Windows, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Good business sense/judgment; understanding the details of creating real value

  • APICS CPIM or related Supply Chain Professional Certifications
  • Experience with Purchasing machined parts and electronic components
  • Experience with MRP/ERP Systems (AS400/SAP/EPICOR)

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES/COMPETENCIES

  • Responsible for all facets of procuring assigned commodities/product lines, including issuing purchase orders, reviewing delivery requirements and expediting/deferring as required, and supporting the production schedule.
  • Utilizes material scheduling techniques to manage targeted inventory levels.
  • Develops and executes strategic and tactical plans to generate productivity for assigned commodities/product-lines in order to generate value for the business.
  • Designs, implements, and monitors reports and reporting systems to evaluate the KPI’s measuring the performance of the supply chain.
  • Develop and manage on-going supplier relationships with key suppliers and has the ability to travel to suppliers as necessary.
  • Identify and develop new or alternate suppliers to meet production requirements while creating overall best value in terms of delivery, quality, and price. Must be capable of recognizing signs of stress at suppliers and reacting quickly as required to avoid production impact.
  • Leads weekly production meetings with Planning & Operations to ensure material requirements align to the production schedule. The Commodity Manager will also attend responsible area board meetings and will establish a good working relationship with the production floor.
  • Supports supplier quality audits on new and existing suppliers and participates in supplier corrective action activities as required. Coordinates the return of non-conforming product to suppliers.
  • Supports the material requirements for New Product Introduction (NPI) Projects. Responsible for fast prototype sourcing for engineering requirements. Able to estimate costs and lead times for development projects with accuracy.
  • Accountable for Diminishing Manufacturing Sources & Material Shortages (DMSMS) and Counterfeit Parts Prevention activities for assigned commodities.
