The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine is the largest of the nine Faculties at King’s, with a presence across four campuses: Guy’s, St Thomas’s, Waterloo and Denmark Hill. The communications team is based in the Hodgkin building on the Guy’s campus.
The Faculty’s research expertise in basic, translational and clinical research, is internationally renowned and drives innovation and impact. Its annual research grant income is £100m.
The Faculty has around 1,900 members of staff (including 480 academic and 680 research staff), 5,400 undergraduate students, 1,600 postgraduate taught students and 1,100 postgraduate research students. It offers 154 biomedical sciences programmes, including professional health programmes.

About the role
As a Communications & Engagement Officer for the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine (one of the most successful centres for research and education in the UK with extensive global partnerships), you will work with the rest of the Faculty Communications team to drive effective, high-quality communications and engagement activity with both internal and external audiences.
You will have responsibility for producing Faculty newsletters, updating web pages, creating social media posts and aspects of event organisation and administration. You will also develop and share great stories about research, teaching and student and staff achievements, helping to reinforce the Faculty’s reputation for excellence.
This is a busy, varied role that will suit someone who is organised, proactive and comfortable working in a fast-paced and busy environment. You will need to work on multiple projects concurrently, and must be able to maintain high standards of accuracy and consistency of messaging. You will need strong interpersonal skills, and a proven ability to engage and connect with colleagues at all levels to build effective working relationships.
This is a full time post, and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- Educated to degree level, or A level/HNC/NVQ 3/HND level (or equivalent) with relevant vocational skills and experience
- Excellent standard of English, including the ability to write in different tones and styles, translating complex information clearly for different audiences
- Proven ability to proofread and edit materials for clarity and accuracy
- Excellent interpersonal skills: able to establish good working relationships with stakeholders at all levels, providing advice with tact and diplomacy in relation to communications and engagement activity
- Ability to manage multiple work streams independently, prioritise and work to tight (and sometimes conflicting) deadlines. Experience of using initiative, good judgement and problem-solving skills to move projects forward in a timely way, recognising when to ask for help
- Experience of creating content for the web and social media channels in a professional capacity, including experience of using Content Management Systems to manage webpages
- Experience of supporting and running events and workshops
- A collaborative attitude to working within a busy team and desire to learn from others
Desirable criteria
- Proficiency in digital design packages and video editing software such as the Adobe Creative Suite or Canva
- Experience of working within the Higher Education sector, or in science or health communications
- Professional qualification or relevant experience in communications, public relations or marketing
