Position Summary:
Reporting to the Associate Director, Communications and Production, and working closely with the Production, Event and Communications Administrator, the Communications Associate supports all activities related to communications plans, produces materials including written and multimedia content, and implements new opportunities to maximize the mission and vision of the Schulich School of Music (SSoM). Participates in the development of the communications strategy and the creation of content to raise visibility and build awareness of the events, programs, people, students, research, publications, and activities of the SSoM. Collaborates closely with SSoM units (such as Students Services, Graduate Studies, Performance and Research Departments and the Dean’s Office) to support and assist with the development and implementation of communications initiatives.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Produces, sources, and disseminates SSoM-related content on topics such as student and alumni success stories, staff achievements, research news, programs, activities, concerts and events.
- Creates, edits, proofreads and formats content in various stages of production, including written and graphic design, for digital communications channels and professional print, newsletters, websites, social media, promotional material, press releases, formal reports, and presentations.
- Prepares material promoting concerts and events through our website, posters and other communications channels such as internal display screens and email newsletters.
- Generates innovative ideas and rapidly produces creative content for the SSoM’s social media channels. Supervises student produced content.
- Identify opportunities and strategies for appropriate content and channels to promote the mission and visibility of the School.
- Participates in the implementation of new initiatives that support, enhance and/or reflect key priorities.
- Collaborates with McGill’s Communications and Institutional Relations units, including the Media Relations Office.
- Takes into consideration McGill’s branding and marketing guidelines in the production of communication projects (brochures, pamphlets, videos, newsletter, etc.)
- Coordinates work with external collaborators, including photographers for photoshoots and photography of special events, graphic designers, printers, translators, among others.
- Monitors internal and external news channels for SSoM-related coverage and, where appropriate, shares these stories through the appropriate communications channels.
- Reviews analytics data to evaluate the success of various communication efforts and collects data for reports. Prepares various reports.
- Assists in the preparation of speaking notes and speeches for SSoM representatives for public events.
- Helps train and oversees the daily work of work study students.
- Keeps current with best practices, top trends and new tools in the rapidly changing field of communications, design, multimedia and social media.
- Performs other related tasks.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
- Proven ability to create and edit compelling communications content, including articles, social media, and email newsletters, in English and French, for a wide range of audiences.
- Knowledge of various musical genres, especially classical music and jazz. Expertise in concert music and familiarity with the Montreal cultural scene.
- Creativity and ability to approach communications efforts from a variety of perspectives.
- Attention to detail and consistent ability to prepare high-quality documents.
- Experience in branding and raising brand awareness is an asset.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
- Experience with providing support to student content creators is an asset.
- Ability to establish priorities and short/long-term plans and objectives.
- Strong organizational skills; ability to assess and resolve problems
- Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, and exceptional interpersonal skills.
- Experience in implementing communications plans and using analytics to assess the success of communications initiatives is a plus.
- Proven ability to work with computer applications and communications tools, including Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Canva, and social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.).
- Experience and skills with photography, video production, and basic graphic design is a plus.
- Excellent ability to write and edit in English, high proficiency in spoken and written French.
