The Community Services Department is a front-line partner with Edmontonians and communities committed to creating a safe, healthy and vibrant city. This department manages hundreds of activities in its commitment to serving the people of Edmonton and making a difference, every day.
The Communications Coordinator will work closely with other team members to provide integrated marketing and communications services for the Community Services department. You will support planning and execution of communications plans to advance City initiatives including the Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) Strategy, a city-wide plan committed to creating a safer, more inclusive Edmonton.
You will achieve results in a respectful, inclusive and service-minded way, with a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments - Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent.

SKILLS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presenting to and writing for various audiences and channels
  • Strong knowledge of traditional and new marketing mediums, including social media
  • Proficiency with the Google platform
  • Knowledge of current public relations, strategic communications principles, and marketing principles and techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to gather technical information from subject matter experts and translate it into accessible communications materials
  • A proven ability to manage multiple projects and deliver quality communication products on time
  • General knowledge of advertising, media, social media, video and design coordination, and print production
  • Proven track record of building effective working relationships with marketing communications staff, clients and internal groups at all levels of an organization; demonstrated respectful and inclusive working style
  • Experience and proficiency with contemporary computer technologies (e.g. Google platform, Adobe Suite, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a two-year post-secondary diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, English or a related discipline
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a designated communications, public relations, public affairs, public information or related position, ideally within a large complex organizatio

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of integrated marketing and communications plans for a range of activities and projects
  • Prepare key messages for internal and external communications needs
  • Identify, generate and coordinate story ideas and social media content Write news releases, public service announcements, blogs, newsletters, advertising copy, speaking notes, social media and other communications and marketing materials
  • Develop engaging content for the City of Edmonton’s websites, digital channels, and other platforms to connect with Edmontonians
  • Provide support to media relations activities, including coordinating media responses and coordinating media events
  • Provide communications support for public engagement, and other internal and external events
  • Coordinate revision, approvals, production and distribution of communication materials (e.g., print, posters, leaflets, brochures, guides, newsletters, videos and advertisements) and liaise with suppliers and other members of City teams to ensure products meet objectives and specifications, on time and within budget
  • Achieve results with a commitment to a respectful and inclusive style
  • Perform other related duties as required
