Communications Design Specialist II
Location: 11738 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta

Position Status: Full Time (40 hrs per week), Permanent
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for two (2) individuals to fill the position of Communications Design Specialist II. Reporting to the Creative Manager, the Communications Design Specialist II will collaborate with a variety of individuals to develop new design concepts, graphics, and layouts in both print and digital media. This work may include advertising and marketing campaigns, event collateral, brochures, newsletters, reports, forms, specialty items, and a variety of other projects. The successful candidate should have expert knowledge of current design software and be skilled with every step of the design process, from concept to the final deliverable. They should also be comfortable working in a fast-paced, high demand environment, with the ability to manage tight deadlines and juggle multiple projects at once. SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Solid understanding of graphic design principles (typography, layout, hierarchy, etc.)
- High level proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Solid knowledge of four-color printing process, and the ability to pre-flight and package files.
- Experience preparing artwork in a variety of formats including screen printing and laser engraving.
- Superior written and oral communication skills, including professional email etiquette.
- Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
- Exceptional organization and time management skills, with the ability to multitask and effectively manage and prioritize requests and deadlines.
- Ability to assess options and implications, engage different perspectives, and create strategic solutions for communications challenges.
- Flexible and adaptable to work in a diverse and fast paced environment.
- Competency to work with and convey messages to different audiences.
- Ability to work in an open work environment with a very collaborative team.
- Political sensitivity and ability to deal with confidential information.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven track record of building collaborative partnerships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture is an asset.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary degree in Graphic Design or certificate in Graphic Communications (equivalent may be considered).
- Minimum 3 years work experience in graphic design, or similar role.
- Experience with photography, DSLR and video cameras, and Adobe editing software.
- Indigenous relations experience an asset.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Position is based in Edmonton; in-office presence is required.
- Ability to work a regular schedule of Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
- Occasional evenings and weekends is required, with notice.
- Reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Travel within Alberta is required. Additional, less frequent, out-of-province travel may also occur, with notice.
Responsibilities:
- Create compelling visual concepts that inform, inspire, and engage our audience
- Design and produce a range of communications materials consistent with Otipemisiwak Métis Government brand standards
- Work under tight deadlines and changing priorities while satisfying client expectations and carrying several projects at once
- Liaise with vendors (printers, promotional suppliers, newspapers, etc.) to establish budgets and production schedules.
- Prepare and pre-flight documents for printing, ensuring that all prepress procedures are followed.
- Process, edit, enhance, and organize photos following industry best practices
- Work with other departments to lead and achieve communications objectives on their projects where needed.
- Execute communications needs at events, including photography and social media, as required.
- Proactively develop networks with internal and external stakeholders to build relationships.
- Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, clients/customers, visitors, and other external stakeholders.
- Other duties as required or assigned.
