POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Director of Administration, and working closely with the Associate Chair, Communications, the Communications Manager provides strategic vision and leadership in communications, marketing, branding, events, and public affairs. The incumbent is responsible for developing and delivering a comprehensive integrated strategy for the Department of Computer Science.
The Communications Manager develops short- and long-term plans for communications, publications, and events, keeping in line with the mission, values, goals, and priorities of the department, and the overall communication strategy of the Faculty of Arts & Science and the University of Toronto. This includes a proactive media relations plan, consulting and advising on topics and issues impacting the department, and developing distinct and comprehensive marketing, creative, advertising and communications campaigns.
The Manager works closely with departmental leadership, faculty, and staff to advise on best practices in communications, events, and media relations, and ensures all content aligns with the department’s strategic positioning and identity. The Manager also develops and fosters relationships with key institutional and external stakeholders.

EDUCATION:

  • University degree or applied college degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in public affairs, journalism, communications, and/or marketing.

Experience:

  • Minimum 6 to 8 years of progressive experience in marketing, communications, and media relations
  • Extensive experience in media relations and successfully managing complex projects
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders and advising senior leaders
  • Experience developing strategic marketing & communication plans
  • Experience creating and executing comprehensive and integrated campaigns
  • Experience leading and managing a communications team; managing staff in a unionized environment an asset
  • Sound working knowledge and experience in all aspects of web-based communications – from site development, design and navigation to content creation and maintenance

Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple complex marketing & communications projects
  • Proficiency in developing content for multi-platform communications including social media, multimedia, graphic design
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills
  • Excellent oral and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated creativity and ability to think strategically
  • Detail oriented
  • Understanding of social media and other platforms
  • Strong research skills, with proven ability to perform market research, analyze research data and identify trends
  • Knowledge of the technology sector domestically and internationally
