MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS
Successful completion of a one (1) year certificate related to Telecommunications, or a two (2) year diploma in a related field.
Alternatively, prior experience working in a primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) centre may be considered.
Minimum two (2) years of relevant customer service experience.
SKILLS
Completed Emergency Response Communication program/certificate preferred.
Large volume switchboard and emergency service experience preferred.
General knowledge of York Region road systems and the ability to interpret maps.
Ability to operate a computer-aided dispatch system and various related interface systems preferred.
Knowledge of emergency system processes, organization’s structure and hierarchy, communications procedures an asset.
Solid organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
Capabilities to deal tactfully with others in a high stress environment.
Demonstrated problem solving and decision making abilities.
Ability to multi-task, adjust priorities, and work in a fast paced and demanding environment.
Responsibilities:
Providing 24/7 emergency response services in our Communications Unit.
Providing superior customer service to members of the community in emergent and non-emergent capacities.
Prioritizing calls for service by obtaining accurate information through questioning techniques, ensuring safety of caller, public and our officers.
Ensuring the safety of community members and officers by instituting York Regional Police Procedures.
Using computer aided dispatch (CAD) system and various police databases to generate calls for services and provide officers with direction for call response in a fast paced work environment.
Directing callers to appropriate resources, liaise with neighbouring police, EMS and fire services.
Determining operational needs for responding officers and provide appropriate direction for call response.
Keeping track of officer location and status, ensuring most efficient response time.
Monitoring radio frequencies and dispatching calls for service as assigned.
