POSITION SUMMARY

The Community Coordinator/Indigenous Mentor is responsible for overseeing the successful implementation of the Health Care Aide Program on behalf of WFN in partnership with Okanagan College and Interior Health. This includes providing direct support to students, building strong relationships with Indigenous organizations, Elders, and community leaders, facilitating cultural integration, and organizing program activities such as workshops and study sessions. The role combines mentorship and coordination, with a focus on addressing the unique needs of Indigenous students and fostering a culturally inclusive learning environment.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Background in healthcare, community health, or a related field.
  • Experience working within the WFN community or other Indigenous communities.
  • Strong understanding of cultural protocols, values, and traditions relevant to WFN and Indigenous health practices.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting role, preferably within healthcare or education.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License with acceptable drivers abstract and reliable transportation.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality and uses discretion on all matters relating to the affairs of the Westbank First Nation.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead culturally appropriate activities and workshops.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to support students’ academic and personal growth.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous health and wellness concepts.
    The salary for this position is $74,000

Responsibilities:

  • Program Coordination
  • Act as the primary point of contact on behalf of WFN with program participants, and on behalf of WFN and program participants with Okanagan College and Interior Health, ensuring smooth communication and delivery of services.
  • Coordinate program logistics, including scheduling classes, workshops, and other related activities.
  • Ensure that students have access to the necessary materials and resources for successful program participation.
  • Manage students’ travel arrangements, dietary needs, and other individual accommodations required for their participation in the program.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and provide regular updates to program administrators
  • Cultural Support and Mentorship
  • Lead weekly cultural workshops every Friday, ensuring content is relevant to the students’ personal and professional development in a healthcare context.
  • Provide mentorship to students, supporting their academic and personal growth throughout the program.
  • Organize study sessions tailored to the needs of the students, helping them understand program materials in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Foster a culturally safe learning environment that acknowledges and incorporates WFN values, traditions, and protocols.
  • Student Support
  • Identify and address students’ challenges, including academic, personal, and logistical issues, providing guidance and connecting them with appropriate resources.
  • Actively engage with students to ensure that their physical, emotional, and cultural needs are met during the program.
  • Monitor student attendance, participation, and performance, ensuring that any issues are addressed proactively.
  • Coordinate access to external resources, such as healthcare professionals or traditional knowledge keepers, as needed.
  • Community Engagement:
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations.
  • Promote the Health Care Aide program within Indigenous communities to encourage participation.
  • Serve as a liaison between the institution and Indigenous community members, elders, and leaders.
  • Partnership Development:
  • Build and maintain partnerships with healthcare employers, industry stakeholders, and Indigenous organizations to provide work placement and employment opportunities for Indigenous graduates.
  • Engage in networking to promote career opportunities for Indigenous Health Care Aide students.
  • Deliverables:
  • Weekly cultural workshops and study sessions organized and facilitated.
  • Monthly progress reports on student participation and outcomes.
  • Coordinated student accommodations (travel, dietary needs, etc.) and resolution of any logistical challenges.
  • Ongoing mentorship and support for all program participants, ensuring retention and successful completion of the program.
