The Community Development Unit supports the broader non-profit /voluntary sector (NPVS) and community organizations by:

  • Building the management, leadership, operational and adaptive capacity of organizations through facilitation and training on governance, leadership, and skill development.
  • Building the human and social capital of the NPVS and community organizations.
  • Building the capacity of strategic dialogue, decision making, and citizen informed policy by Executive leaders in the Government of Alberta.

QUALIFICATIONS

University Degree in a related field plus four years progressively responsible experience is required.
Equivalency:

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Related experience includes:

  • Experience in the Nonprofit Sector in Board Member or Executive Director Role.
  • Experience with the Francophone nonprofit sub-sector.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit sector trends and issues, and in a particular for Francophone nonprofit organizations
  • Experience using community and/or organizational development theories, principles, and processes.
  • Experience using adult learning theories, principles, and processes.
  • Deliver group processes in person, online and in hybrid settings.

Responsibilities:

The Community Development Officer Francophone (CDOF) is part of a larger team of Community Development Officers in the Community Development Unit. The CDOF is a front-line delivery staff for capacity building services provided to the non-profit/voluntary sector, community-based organizations, and government. The position will provide services to all nonprofit organizations but will have a priority and focus on Francophone community leaders and nonprofit community organizations. The CDOF is able to provide services in both French and English and is the only staff on the Team required to do so. The CDOF uses expert knowledge of facilitation theory and practice, strategic planning, public engagement, consultation theory, group dynamics, training, adult learning, non-profit governance and applied best practices to deliver successful projects. The CDOF uses their unique understanding to design and deliver customized projects that respond to the organizational needs of non-profits. The CDOF enables the attainment of community goals and desired outcomes by supporting community development initiatives through leadership and by working collaboratively with community serving organizations, private sector, and municipal and provincial government. This position is a highly independent one with considerable autonomy in schedule, resource allocation, approach and reporting with broad leeway to deliver on projects and assignments.

Main Duties of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Coaching and Consultation Assistance to Community Nonprofit Organizations and Leaders.
  • Customized, unique, specialized Facilitation and Capacity Building Service to Community Nonprofit Organizations and Groups.
  • Collaboration, and Stakeholder Engagement Design and Implementation
  • Apply and adapt fundamental project management processes, methodologies, and tools and techniques to specific client circumstances.
  • Establish and maintain innovative, productive partnerships between cooperating societies, private sector corporations, community organizations, and government to broaden the base of support for community actions by integrating the principles and practices of community development.
  • Assessment of overall capacity building needs, strengths, and areas for improvement of community non-profit organizations, community collaborations, and government entities with a priority on Francophone communities.
