Description:

Reporting to the Manager of Fire and Protective Services, the Community Peace Officer Level 1 (CPO1) is responsible for the enforcement of municipal bylaws and provincial statutes in accordance with policies set out by the Town Council and the authority of the Province of Alberta. The position will work with the community to provide a balanced service while enforcing a broad range of areas including traffic, parking bylaws and animal control.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Working in the community, issue warning tickets, violation tickets and offence tags for infractions within the jurisdiction of the position.
  • Conduct proactive patrols of the community.
  • Work in collaboration with RCMP, Fire and EMS including responding to emergency situations.
  • Investigate and handle reported bylaw infractions and animal control complaints.
  • Provide general information to the public and participate in community events.
  • Work closely with the other Town departments to ensure the safety and security of the Town.
  • Collect and document information and evidence on matters and work with other parties including legal counsel and provincial court representatives to support prosecution of offenders.
  • Support neighbouring communities as assigned by the Manager.

Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education in a recognized Law Enforcement program
  • Able to pass requirements to obtain Peace Officer status including obtaining Level 1 Community Peace Officer Status, required physical testing and holding a police security clearance
  • Able to obtain a Commissioner of Oaths
  • A minimum of one year experience in a Community Peace Officer or equivalent position
  • Certified in the use and deployment of OC spray and baton
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including ability to interact professionally with the public
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification including AED
  • Good computer skills including proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and experience with law enforcement databases and equipment
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with good driving record (maximum four demerits)
  • Also considered assets for this position are: Emergency Vehicle Operations training; Radar/Laser operations; completion of Alberta Solicitor General’s Public Security Peace Officer Training

This is a full-time position requiring flexibility to work 8 hour shifts between the hours of 6 am and 8 pm including weekends.
