In our new Compensation Specialist role, you will collaborate closely with the People and Culture (HR) team and business unit leaders across the entire organization. The Compensation Specialist is responsible for designing, implementing and managing the organization’s compensation programs. This role involves analyzing compensation data, conducting market research, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and collaborating with HR and management to develop competitive compensation strategies that attract and retain top talent.
Reporting to the Director of People Experience, your leadership and expertise will be a critical piece of our talent and HR strategies.

  • This role is remote-first, and we expect attendance at quarterly meetings in person at our Oakville offices. Someone could work from a home office or travel into one of our offices in Grimsby or Oakville if preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Compensation Analysis: Analyze internal and external compensation data to ensure competitive pay structures. Conduct market surveys and benchmark compensation against industry standards.
  • Job Evaluation: Review and evaluate job descriptions and classifications to ensure accurate and equitable compensation alignment.
  • Program Development: Recommend strategic direction and design, and implement compensation programs, including base pay, variable pay, bonuses and incentives. Ensure programs support organizational goals and compliance with regulations. This includes managing annual processes including Merit, Short Term Incentive Plans (STIP) and Long Term Incentive Plans (LTIP) programming.
  • Policy Development: Develop, update and communicate compensation policies and guidelines to ensure clarity and compliance.
  • Reporting & Systems: Prepare and present compensation reports and analysis to senior management. Utilize data to drive decisions and recommendations. Ensure the accuracy and integrity of compensation data within the HRIS system.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with federal, provincial and local compensation regulations. Stay updated on relevant laws and industry trends.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with HR team members to support recruitment and retention strategies. Partner with management to address compensation-related concerns. Ensure competitive pay and equal treatment by creating written Comp Recommendations in partnership with HR Business Partners and Recruiters for all salaried hires and promotions.
  • Employee Consultation: Provide guidance and support to employees regarding compensation-related inquiries, policies and programs.
  • Training: Develop and deliver training sessions for HR staff and management on compensation practices and policies.
  • Projects: Act as a subject-matter-expert on various business unit incentive plan discussions, and contribute ideas and industry insights to help create creative solutions. Inclusive of adhoc projects and programs that support APL’s Strategy Plan.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Sociology or related area and/or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years relevant direct compensation experience.
  • Sales, Retail or CPG industry experience an asset.
  • Experience in HR demonstrating the ability to deal with confidential material, in a manner demonstrating sound judgment and with a high level of discretion.
  • Experience in interpretation and statistical analysis of market data.
  • Very good communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Project management experience and ability to plan, schedule and deliver both long- and short-term projects, with consideration to stakeholders and adherence to strict deadlines.
  • Highly skilled with Excel and MS Office programs.
  • Experience with HRIS systems, Dayforce is considered an asset
  • Strong written, verbal and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
