Description:
The LEMONTREE (Land Ecosystem Models based On New Theory, observations and Experiments) project has been developing new approaches, based on eco-evolutionary optimality theory, for modelling vegetation processes and plans to integrate these new model components into the JULES (UK Community) land-surface scheme. The post-holder will be responsible for implementing the new model components into the JULES framework, in collaboration with project scientists at the University of Reading, Imperial College London, and the Met Office. They will also be responsible for testing model performance against both the standard version of JULES and site observations, optimisation of the performance of the new model, and for developing a modular implementation scheme that can be used with other land-surface models. The postholder will be based in reading but will be expected to spend a significant amount of their time at the Met Office in Exeter as well as interacting with other members of the LEMONTREE team in Reading and Imperial.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Excellent programming skills, specifically Fortran, C and C++
- Experience with high performance computing
- Practical experience in using big data sets for model evaluation
- A first degree with a strong numerical or computational component (or equivalent experience)
- A strong understanding of environmental physics
- The ability to use own initiative and plan, manage and prioritise workload effectively to meet varied and strict project delivery deadlines .
