MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 21 years of age by the Graduation date of September 1, 2025.
  • Working knowledge of law enforcement practices related to wildlife, fisheries management, and recreational boating.
  • Ability to be trained in the safe and proficient use of law enforcement equipment, vehicles, and boats.
  • Ability to understand and comply with laws, regulations, and agency policies and procedures.
  • Ability to plan and execute law enforcement operations and conduct thorough investigations.
  • Skill in recognizing, collecting, and preserving evidence.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex laws, regulations, and court rulings, and provide legally relevant court testimony.
  • Ability to perform forcible arrests.
  • Effective communication skills in a diverse and inclusive work environment, with the public and agency staff.
  • Ability to deliver educational presentations.
  • Physical ability to meet the job’s demands.
  • Working knowledge of criminal laws, rules of evidence, search and seizure procedures, and law enforcement practices relevant to fish, wildlife, and boating laws.
  • Must be able to work rotating schedules, including weekends and holidays.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Possession of or eligibility for a Virginia driver’s license.
  • Relevant experience and successful completion of pre-employment and probationary requirements.

Conservation Police
This position will require the completion of an annual Statement of Economic Interest disclosure form in accordance with The State and Local Government Conflict of Interest Act §§ 2.2-3114, 2.2-3115, or 2.2-3116.

The Conservation Police Basic Academy is scheduled to begin in February 2025.

Top candidates will be hired as Law Enforcement Officer I, with advancement opportunities to Law Enforcement Officer II after successfully completing the probationary period.
DWR Conservation Police Officers provide a broad range of law enforcement services, focusing on wildlife, fish, and boating incidents. They ensure public safety by responding to queries, handling complaints, and enforcing laws related to illegal activities. In addition to their enforcement duties, Conservation Police Officers actively engage in outreach by delivering educational presentations, setting up exhibits, and running programs. These efforts are designed to foster positive relationships with the public, align with local law officials, and further the Agency’s mission to promote conservation and responsible resource management.
