A DAY IN THE LIFE:

The essential elements of the job duties:

  • Delegate and coordinate work assignments for construction technicians and surveyors.
  • Coordinate the sampling and testing of aggregates, steel, asphalt, soils and all other materials.
  • Make recommendations to management related to change order.
  • Respond to inquiries from local public officials, news organizations and other interested parties.
  • Ensure that both INDOT and contractor employees are performing work in a safe manner in compliance with OSHA and other applicable standards, and reports deficiencies to appropriate office.
  • Maintain all files related to project in an orderly and usable manner.
  • Supervise preparation of final construction records, examines and approves contractor requests for payment.
  • Attend preconstruction and partnering meetings as INDOT representative.
  • Meet with affected property owners in the project area and works to resolve access restriction issues, drainage problems and other issues that may arise during construction.
  • Prepare and maintain daily project records and files, and oversees the work of technicians doing the same, including daily reports of materials placed, locations of work, work interruptions, contractor workforce size and composition, test results, and any other related information.
  • Prepare simple field drawings or sketches as necessary to implement and document minor changes to project specifications.
  • Prepare and submit a wide variety of documentation to the Final Review Office, and coordinates with the Final Review Office in the project closure process, answering questions and doing research as requested.
  • Teach certified technician classes and assist students in preparation for examinations.
  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
  • Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

Responsibilities:

ROLE OVERVIEW:

As the Construction Project Engineer, you will be responsible for contract management of thedistrict’s construction projects. You will work with designers, project managers, and agency leaderswhile providing on-site support of project scope, payments, construction methods and equipment,project progress and scheduling, and contractor forecasts. Additionally, you will manage a team ofhighway technicians (inspectors), helping to mentor and train them in testing of materials andinspection best practices while issuing feedback on performance. As part of INDOT’s constructiondivision you have the ability to be a part of various complex projects providing value in the serviceprovided as quality assurance for all taxpayers in Indiana.
The ConstructionDivision at INDOT is primarily responsible for managing and executing the agency’s multimillion-dollar contracts for preventative maintenance and new construction of INDOT’s facilities (i.e.roadways, bridges, culverts, and traffic signals).
