An exciting opportunity has arisen for 10PAs substantive Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to work in Hillingdon Urgent Care Team with special interest in Paediatric Liaison.
The post holder will have the responsibility of managing young people who predominantly present through Hillingdon Hospital Emergency Department and those admitted to paediatric and adult medical wards. In addition, the team provides a short-term crisis intervention work.
Urgent Care Pathway has recently received additional funding to further develop short term crisis intervention (tier 3.5) input and this would be a stimulating opportunity to help shape the new short term crisis intervention service.
You will be joining a friendly and welcoming multidisciplinary team based across 2 clinic sites in the middle of the borough. There are good transport connections and parking at both sites.

Staffing in the Hillingdon Urgent Care Team includes– consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist (1.0 WTE) which is this post, team lead (1.0), clinical nurse specialist (3.0), assistant psychologist (1.0) and an administrator (1.0). The Urgent Care Team provides assessments at the Emergency Department and to the paediatric ward and medical wards (for 16- and 17-year olds) at Hillingdon Hospital as well as 7 day follow up appointments for Hillingdon patients discharged from acute hospitals. On average the team sees 30 new cases/month. They are seen by the clinical nurse specialists (or another mental health professional) and discussed with the team at the first instance and, if required, discussed with the consultant psychiatrist. The cases are currently not kept on the caseload but either transferred to another team/service for further input or discharged to primary care. Once the urgent care outreach service (UCOS for crisis work) is developed, it is expected that the team will carry a maximum caseload of 10 active cases at any one time.
The direct clinical care consultant caseload is expected to vary between 10-20 cases, combined between liaison and crisis aspects of the service. However, the consultant is not expected to provide direct case management.
“Central and North West London (CNWL) specialises in caring for people with a wide range of mental and physical health needs and is one of the largest mental health trusts in England. Each CAMHS service has its own local management structure: HIllingdon CAMHS has a Lead Psychiatrist, Therapies lead and team manager who work closely with the outer boroughs service manager.
Hillingdon UCT team lead will work closely with the UCT consultant (this post) and UCT service manager. Hillingdon UCT is also linked with Brent & Harrow UCT and Kensington, Chelsea and Westminster UCT and the postholder will be part of the UCT Senior Management Team lead by the UCT clinical lead and service manager.

General duties

  • To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients
  • To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively and maintain accurate, contemporaneous medical notes in line with the Trust record keeping policy
  • To participate in the service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service
  • To attend and participate in the internal CPD activities and maintain up to date CPD activities
  • To attend the monthly consultant meetings and other relevant professional meetings
  • To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12 (2) and AC approval
  • To participate annually in job plan review
  • To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services, sharing with other consultant colleagues the medical contribution to management
  • To comply with the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures

Clinical and management duties
The appointee will take a consultant lead role in the local urgent care team.
To provide consultation and medical input to the weekly clinical review meeting for UCT
To provide psychiatric assessments when required and support the Urgent Care Team with emergency work at Hillingdon Hospital and 7 day follow ups. Hillingdon Urgent Care team sees on average 30-35 new patients per month offering urgent assessments, 7 day follow-ups and ward reviews as needed.
To lead on the development of the Tier 3.5 service (Urgent Care Outreach Service) for Hillingdon
To contribute to the monthly senior management meetings for the local CAMHS as well as the crisis pathway.
To take a lead role, together with the urgent care team lead, in developing joint crisis pathways and protocols with the acute hospital
To attend interface meetings with the emergency department and contribute to professional meetings for young people at the hospital, including bed escalation meetings.
To provide clinical supervision to psychiatry trainees and speciality doctors contributing to the work of the UCT on a case by case basis as needed.
To lead on the development of interface working between UCT and other CAMHS sub-teams as well as ACTS (Adolescent Community Treatment Service)
To provide the continuity of consultant input for young people admitted to paediatric and medical wards and, if required, be the responsible clinician (RC)
The paediatric liaison sessions will be used to offer consultation to paediatrics and to develop a business case for a paediatric liaison service in collaboration with the local acute trust (Hillingdon Hospital)
To participate in case-based discussions with other CAMHS consultants and junior medical colleagues within the Hillingdon CAMJS doctors meeting which takes place twice a month.
To offer teaching to colleagues at the acute hospital, CAMHS colleagues and trainees and medical students
To facilitate monthly consultation group with the out-of-hours team together with other UCT consultants
To work together and support the team lead in providing activity reports and contribute to providing presentation of the work to senior management meetings and commissioners. This may include the North West London Provider Collaborative and the CNWL CAMHS Central Care Quality and Performance Management Group (CQPMG
