Consultant Haematologist – with a special interest in SIHMDS

UCLH is seeking a substantive 10 session Consultant Haematologist with a special interest in the laboratory diagnosis of haematological malignancy. The appointee will work in our specialist integrated haematological malignancy diagnostic service (SIHMDS) as well as another haemato-oncological sub-speciality. They will participate in the development of our research portfolio, and should be committed to enhancing the national and international profile of the service and to delivering the highest quality patient care.
The post is split between laboratory diagnostic and clinical work, outpatient clinic and inpatient attending on a rotational basis. Participation in regional and national meetings is required, with the aim of developing a national profile. UCLH is currently expanding all laboratory disciplines within its SIHMDS service to incorporate new developments in next-generation sequencing, flow cytometry and the assessment/quantification of residual disease. The successful applicant will join our current team of four SIHMDS consultants, and will be expected to play a key role in the development and running of the service in close partnership with other stakeholders. The appointee will enhance research opportunities within their specialist field, in conjunction with the UCL Cancer Institute and BRC in addition to participating in both undergraduate and postgraduate education. Active participation in MDTs and facilitating patient care with referring centres is expected.
The post-holder will oversee turnaround times and quality of laboratory reports, as well as supervising the laboratory SpRs. The appointee should be comfortable interpreting flow cytometry and molecular data, and incorporating laboratory findings into integrated reports. The appointee will be expected to help devise practice guidelines, contribute to service improvement, participate in research projects and also in technology development and implementation.
The post-holder will also be join one of the haemato-oncology specialty teams. The team selected will depend on the interests of the successful applicant, as long as this meets the needs of the department. Inpatient attending for the chosen specialty will be required, on a rotational basis. Active participation in MDTs, clinical trials and facilitating patient care with referring centres is encouraged. The appointee will take part in medical undergraduate teaching and supervision and training of junior doctors and to contribute to local and regional SpR teaching sessions.
There will be an attending and on call commitment which will include approximately 8 weeks of attending/on-call every calendar year giving a Category B supplement of 2%, although this may vary depending on frequency. The SIHMDS provides an out of hours emergency service between 9AM and 3PM at weekends and on Bank Holidays.
