Description:
We are seeking an enthusiastic substantive Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join the existing Emergency Department (ED) team.
We are a dynamic department that is committed to providing high quality patient care whilst embracing the benefits of digital technology. The ED is about to embark on an exciting journey with a substantial capital investment into our front door. There is considerable scope for the successful candidates to be involved in and lead service re-design and quality improvement projects, shaping the Royal Surrey Emergency Department’s future state.
Consultants who join us will be given bespoke mentorship, job-planning as well as the benefits of a flexible rota that is currently semi-annualised but we will be moving to full self-rostering in the coming months.
Whilst the post has a strong emphasis on direct, consultant delivered emergency care, we are seeking applicants who will train and upskill a diverse clinical work force including medical, acute care practitioner (ACP), physician assistant (PA), undergraduate and nursing staff. We are established as a regional point of care ultrasound (POCUS) training centre with daily teaching run by accredited trainers. We also boast multi-professional simulation sessions, dedicated weekly teaching, and a unique CESR programme.
Assessment, diagnosis and initial treatment of all patients requiring emergency treatment
Referral of patients to other specialties and disciplines external to the hospital
Facilitation of flow within the hospital by streaming patients to same day emergency care (SDEC) options
Supervision of junior medical colleagues including clear, bespoke advice or in person review of patients
Working with nursing and operational colleagues to deliver performance against quality indicators and system metrics to deliver safe, effective and sustainable care
Work in conjunction with the nurse in charge, medical and surgical colleagues to ensure that there is effective and timely communication between teams and facilitation of flow
When colleagues are absent alternative clinical duties may be arranged to provide appropriate cover.
Provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervise and train the junior and specialty doctors in Emergency Medicine, advanced nurse practitioners and emergency nurse practitioners.
Be proactive in the clinical governance agenda and take on leadership roles to support continuous learning and improvement.

The Royal Surrey is currently in the middle of a comprehensive transformational change programme designed to improve the way we manage non-elective patients attending the Emergency Department.
This post attracts 10 programmed activities per week. There may be the opportunity to increase this by negotiation and any special interests will be considered.
The job plan for the first three months will be based on a provisional/indicative timetable. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Clinical Director within three months of the commencement date of the appointee.
The supporting professional activities (SPAs) allocation within the provisional job plan is an illustrative guide only and will be finalised following individual agreement with successful candidates.
Initially 2.5 SPAs will be provided as standard for a full-time contract and reviewed at the first job plan within three months.
Regular job planning meetings will be undertaken with the post holder to ensure that the appointee is remunerated for any additional activities undertaken and that the job plan accurately reflects the overall workload undertaken by the post holder
