Description:
It is an exciting time to join North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC) as we work with the University of Cumbria and Imperial College London to launch the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine (PCSM) in 2025. Our vision is to be a leading organisation for medical education and training.
We are seeking to recruit a Consultant Gastroenterologist who will embed themselves as a practising clinician at NCIC, but also spend part of their time working collaboratively to help develop and eventually deliver teaching in Gastroenterology at PCSM.
The North Cumbria GI Service is a new, cohesive and integrated department, combining the services of gastroenterology and endoscopy, upper gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, colorectal, emergency GI surgery. Associated with the transformation of all our services across the Trust, and in conjunction with the introduction of our model for acute medical care, it is envisaged that future configurations will focus complex in patient work at the Carlisle site, and elective outpatient services (endoscopy and outpatient clinics) will be provided by all of the team across the Trust. Sub specialty interest will be encouraged where this contributes to and complements the department and Trusts’ service needs.
While appointees will be appointed to a base unit, all members of the team will be expected to contribute to all aspects of the general gastroenterology service across the Trust.
This is a joint post between NCIC and PCSM, which will enable the postholder to develop a career both in medical education alongside clinical practice.
At PCSM, you will be working as the Subject Lead for Gastroenterology, developing and delivering the curriculum, from the anatomy, pathophysiology and clinical skills to the design of suitable clinical placements across the Cumbria region.
The Gastroenterology department has two dedicated GI wards within the Cumberland Infirmary at Carlisle for the treatment of inpatients. The plan in the near future is to have all GI areas co-located. There is a dedicated 3-room endoscopy unit at The Cumberland Infirmary and the new endoscopy unit at West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven has 2 dedicated rooms in a new, state of the art facility. There is a specialist GI physiology lab on both sites.
The Trust has also just been successful in a national bid for a new 5 room Endoscopy Unit planned to open in 2025 at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.
At NCIC, we have an ambition to deliver outstanding hospital and health services to half a million people. Established on 1st October 2019, the Trust is creating a centre of excellence in providing rural and remote healthcare and provides a wide range of community and acute services throughout north Cumbria and beyond. We’re responsible for delivering over 70 services across 15 main locations and we employ more than 6,500 members of staff.
Our 5 key principles demonstrate our belief in the delivery of ‘safe, high quality care every time’.
Being a clinically led organisation
Quality and safety at the heart
A positive patient experience every time
A great place to work
Managing our money well
As an organisation we are serious about supporting a diverse workforce that reflects our local community and are very much focused on being an inclusive and compassionate place to work.
Relocation package maybe available to successful candidates.
Act as Subject Lead for Respiratory, working closely with relevant academic leads and clinical colleagues in NCIC and other associated trusts to formulate and implement a plan for the delivery of the subject teaching within Medical Sciences module, and the delivery of related placements within the Clinical Skills and Professional Practice module, including learning outcomes, timetabling and resource requirements.
Use subject matter expertise and educational experience to create and curate high quality teaching materials across a range of teaching and learning modalities, which reflect the conditions and presentations that students will need to recognise for the Medical Licensing Assessment and are authentic to the students’ parallel clinical experiences.
Work closely with other teaching leads and development teams to ensure close integration of medical science, anatomy, and clinical skills and reasoning teaching within the subject.
Develop formative and summative assessments based on the learning materials generated that are aligned to, and reflective of, the questions students will encounter in the relevant aspects of Medical Licencing Assessment.
Work collaboratively with module leads and other subject leads to ensure that students are prepared for placements, and to ensure that the student learning experience is equitable across different clinical sites.
Once the programme is underway, continuously monitor, evaluate and improve the quality of content and delivery.
Where placements are provided at more than one site, work with local education providers to ensure activity is well calibrated to provide as uniform an experience as possible.
Contribute as requested to the wider delivery of medical school activities, for example through participation in admissions, tutoring, and assessment and feedback.
Actively participate in PCSM committees and fora, as required.
Review and respond promptly to feedback from all sources, such as student surveys, staff-student committees and external examiners.
