Job Description
General Medicine is rapidly expanding at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, as the benefit to the patient of having their care guided by a Consultant with an understanding of a multisystem approach is being rediscovered on a national scale. We are seeking an enthusiastic, forward-thinking Consultant with a passionate interest in contributing to the development of all the facets of what GIM can offer patient care, to join our current consultant team. Due to the size of our catchment area you will be involved in the management of an incredibly wide range of pathologies, developing your skills and providing ample opportunity for service improvement, clinical teaching and research.
Recruitment to these posts will support the ongoing development of General Internal Medicine in Portsmouth including further developing integrated short stay pathways alongside our large Acute Medicine Unit, improving seven-day services and increasing our involvement in research.
In addition to patient care, training is an important part of life within the GIM department. We are lucky to have a large number of trainees from a range of training programmes for whom we provide clinical and educational supervision, assessments and regular teaching sessions. We are also developing our alternative medical workforce with the introduction of Medical Technicians and Advanced Clinical Practitioners.
We are pleased to say we have great teaching opportunity at the post graduate and under graduate level. PHU is at the forefront of PACES teaching in the south. PHU has been hosting PACES UK exam three times a year. There is an opportunity to become PACES examiner. General Internal Medicine team will be very much engaged in teaching of King’s College London/Portsmouth University Graduate Medical Student from this year. There will be a great opportunity for the teaching there.
For those with a dual CCT or speciality interests, sessions are negotiable dependant on qualifications. Current consultants within General Medicine maintain sessions in our subspecialty Renal and Endocrine departments. In addition to the aforementioned, within the Trust we have sizable gastroenterology, cardiology and respiratory departments should your specialty qualifications pertain to these. Should a candidate with a single CCT in General Internal or Acute Medicine desire to develop a specialty interest, annualised contracts are available to provide the scope for this, and many of our specialty colleagues have expressed an interest to aid in your development.
The successful candidates will have the opportunity to work with Dr Golam Yahia , GIMCD PHU, who has recently appointed as Training programme Director(TPD) for Wessex deanery. This will create huge opportunity to get involved with GIM training programme and supervision of the trainees
