Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Spinal Injuries at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHSFT.
The Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries (MCSI) is concerned with the prevention of Spinal Injuries, mazimising neurological recovery, minimising complications of disability, complications following discharge and maintain health, independent and a good quality of life on an ongoing basis.
The Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries Unit is one of 11 in the UK (8 in England) designated to receive and treat spinal cord injured patients. The unit has 44 beds which include 15 acute and 29 rehabilitation/planned admission beds. We work closely with the Trauma centres. We also admit paediatric patients to Alice ward and we have 2 additional amenity beds that are flexed up for NHS patients as required and admit private patients.
Interested is welcomed from candidates listed on the GMC’s specialist register in either Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery or Rehabilitation Medicine.

We are looking for a full time Consultant in Spinal injuries to provide an effective, sustainable, consultant clinical service that can be flexible and responsive to the changing context around spinal cord injury care.
This full time post comprises 7.5 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) with 2.5 support professional activities (SPA).
The on-call commitment frequency for the post is currently 1:4 and candidates will be required to reside within 30 minutes from hospital whilst on call.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL BE EXPECTED TO:

facilitate interdisciplinary care and coordinated medical management.
promote and support the rehabilitation process, delivered through the MCSI’s patient centred goal planning system.
provide a sound contribution of medical knowledge, expertise and diagnostic acumen related to spinal cord injury, the associated multi-system dysfunction and pathophysiological consequences.
ensure diagnosis and prognosis are accurate; treatments preserve function with minimal side effects.
management of medical conditions is integrated with the rehabilitation process.
provide effective prevention, detection and treatment strategies for medical complications.
communicate with patients (and significant others and health care workers when relevant), in appropriate and understandable ways so that there is informed participation and consent in their management, tailored to the clinical situation.
counsel patients and their relatives or significant others during the initial acute stage, during difficult or crisis situations and for specific issues such as work and sexual functioning. This includes organisation of, or onward referral for, family support
act as an advocate: eg in negotiations with community and funding authorities, providing information for medico-legal proceedings, conflict/disagreement resolution.
within the wider NHS context to promote good practice related to SCI care
